Llanelli for a Small Mid Week Break in April

Hey,

Me and the OH are going away for the 3 days (10th - 13th April) and are staying in Llanelli Cross Hand Travellodge (£10 a night Family room, woo!)

I suppose we aren't the typical young couple, we don't want to sit in the pub all day or on the beach. We would like to actually see the place!!!

Being a moneysaver, low cost is always appreciated. We both have student cards so things could work out slightly cheaper ...

Basically just after some suggestions! Thought about going to Swansea / Cardiff ... maybe Aberwsywth (I cant spell it, I know!) if its a nice day. All help appreciated! :T

  • Hi,
I live approx 6 miles from cross hands. Sorry to say but there isn't much to see without a fair bit of travelling. The Cross Hands travelodge is at the end of the M4 - under the huge McDonalds sign! (arround an hours drive from both cardiff & aberystwyth-in opposite directions). Check out the carmarthenshire website for local activities or places of interest to visit:

If you'd like more information give me your age range & interests and I'll get back to you!
    Hope this helps!

Your first post is to help me! Im touched. :hello: hello :hello: and welcome to MSE.com.

Not bothered about travelling too much, although Cardiff looked a bit closer than an hour away on the map. Ah well. I cant believe it right next to McDonalds ... im going to be so tempted for two days!

We are both 20. We both like walking, although nothing to strenuous, so any trails/walks or maybe a coastal route would be nice. Off the top of my head I wouldnt know what else to suggest! Im sure we will have a look around Swansea at some point, is there something there definetly worth seeing/doing?
  • How about a trip to Pembrokeshire? The coastal path is beautiful and not too strenuous. There's a wooden rollercoaster at Oakwood. Tenby which offers boat trips to the islands of Caldey, fishing trips, etc. St David's which is a tiny city with a lovely cathedral. Barafundle Bay with it's beautiful beach.

Hope you have a nice trip! I live in Narbeth, Pembrokeshire which has some nice shops but not very moneysaving as they're a tad expensive, for the tourists to spend their money in! ;)

Have a look at https://www.visitpembrokeshire.co.uk for more ideas.

I have only been to Swansea on one occasion and it was wonderful. The Gower Coast has some of the most scenic walks and beaches you will ever see. Mumbles has some of the best restaurants and Swansea seems to be the place to be. I wish I had bought a house there a few years ago - apparently some property prices around Swansea have increased by over 200% in the last year alone. Enjoy your holiday - I certainly did.

Sorry but what a place to go.

Oakwood park is in Pembrokshire if you want a fun packed day. If you want to go shopping then it's Cardiff. Llanelli and Swansea are dreadful. It'll take you an hour or more on a bus to Cardiff. Cardiff also have the new millenium theatre & stadium which are nice to walk around.

Gower is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Lots of nice walks. Look on the here. For what's on try Carmarthenshire site or Swansea site.

    Hope it doesn't rain!!!

As for Llanelli, not sure what it's like. Just researched and it is approx. 12 miles from Swansea. Apparently there is a very nice beach at a place called Cefn Sidan not too far away.

:T Thanks for all your suggestions so far!!!

Tenby sounds nice - we have had a couple of trips on boats before in various places and always enjoyed it. Whats the island of Caldey like?

The OH has apparently been in the area before when she was younger and mentioned the mumbles - although not had alot of look locating it on a map to ge to! Ill be driving so we dont need to use public transport so it will be quicker and easier - but it does mean the OH is going to have to map read ... ahem.

It won't rain! Im confident. And either way, im sure two 20 year olds can occupy themselves in a Travellodge if it does. (Ay! Stop thinking like that!). We plan to see one of our friends who the OH met as Uni down there and go out for a meal with her and her OH which will be quite nice. And for £10 a night for a room - I think everyone should mini break more often!

Will have a look over all these links you wonderful people have given. Feel free to suggest anymore ideas! Thanks v.much.
  • I'm sure you're gonna have a good time. It's also a very good value break - we also use Travelodge for breaks.

We live within 4 mls of Crosshands and there's loads to see and do. Plus you're in the land of Brains beer; great stuff and not expensive :j

Obviously Poppy doesn't know the area. :rotfl: :rotfl:

For good walks and great beaches go to Pembrey Country park SEE HERE

For pretty valley scenery head up to Llandovery and then take the minor roads around Cilycwm, also a beautiful walking/hiking and around Llyn Brianne. Brecon Beacons also an interesting natural area. Look out for the 'red kites'.

If it rains (does sometimes ;) ) There's a retail outlet complex and a multi-plex cinema at Junc 36 on M4 caled Sarn Park/Mc Arthur Glen . Plus Malls in Llanelli, Swansea (also an interesting indoor market) + Cardiff which is also a good walk around shopping area.

If you need any more info - just PM me.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Have had a look on all the website you've suggested and compiled all the good bits into a Word Document that I can print off so we can decide what to do for each day depending on the weather etc ... complete with directions from RAC on how to get there.

On Caldey Island, is there much to do there? Had a look on the website, but there doesn't seem alot on the island. How much is the boat trip across? The trips start on the day we are down there, how convient!

Also, any tips on how to get down to Llanelli from the Midlands. There are 2 routes. Via M6, M5, M50 which is quicker but longer or a more direct route. Any suggestions?

Just depends whether you want scenic or get to the Travelodge quickly ;) .

Travelling thru central Wales can be very interesting and pretty. So you might as well enjoy your break whilst travelling to Cross Hands. But, if it's bad vis due to rain or hill fog etc you might be better on Motorway - but that could be more dangerous in bad weather.

So there you are - choice is yours; hope you enjoy your holiday.

    Happy
