Do they suggest other approved people who could sign, as solicitors will cost! Ask them first, who is acceptable - maybe you know a professional person - architect, bank manager, bank clerk, policeman who they would accept.

It better be, or else they lose my business! I'm not going to find a solicitor and then pay him money to prove who I am! It's probably cheaper to go to Wales for a day than hiring a solicitor, which really beats the whole point in getting the account!!

Mary, Principality are sending me the forms, thank you.

I've been trying to close my Derbyshire. I spent 15 mins on hold (on their expensive 0845 number)

For anyone wanting to call the Derbyshire on their geo number it is
    01332 841000

I am in the same situation. I got my Principality forms through the post and they want proof-signed photocopies of official documents for proof of identity. I am beginning to think the hassle involved is a bit too much... Apparently the proof-signed documents are to be signed by a solicitor, etc.!!

Maybe someone will find a flaw with this (other than them going missing), but I just sent the originals. I have always done this and they have always been returned.

I can quite happily live with losing my council tax bill thank you! My inland revenue statement just shows a small refund and my credit card statement is for a zero balance as I don't use that card anyway.

Just send document you could afford to lose.

Well I can afford to lose a council tax bill or bank statement. This is ok for proof of address but proof of ID: these have to be driving licence or passport because they are the only things on the list that I have. And I can't afford to lose them...

Or can I? How much is a replacement driving licence if one got 'lost' I wonder?

You have no experience of RoyalMail in my area then! Mail and parcels have gone missing in the past, others found later over the fence in a nearby school soaking in a puddle (sic), delivery signatures forged (sic) - the list is endless...

I suppose that's sensible advice. Thanks. But like MiserlyMartin I haven't got "everything" on the list that they request. I don't pay council tax and neither do I have electricity board or gas bills, so I am stuffed.

I'm going to have to do the same with Bradford and Bingley as I'm moving my ISA as well.

Anyway, I'm going to call them and see what they say.

....but what if you dont have either of these items in the first place. They are taking liberties by thinking all of the population drives a car or has been abroad. I have done neither.

I have just finished applying to:-

Scarborough - Didn't need any docs as did it electronically

Leek - Sent cheque made out to self and credit card statement as proof of name. Council tax bill as proof of address.

Pricipality - Sent credit card statement, council tax bill and IR statement of account.

All have now been returned and very quickly too.

I understand peoples concerns about royal mail and guess I didn't think about people who don't have such documents.

I wouldn't have sent my passport or drivers licence for sure. Guess in that case I woulda had to stump up for certified copies.

Don't the post office offer this as a service? Anyone know how much they charge?

This thread has morphed a bit into discussion of hassles of switching accounts. This hassle is more important than 0.1 or 0.2% more or less on accounts, in fact it is a principal reason why ppl do not take the trouble to get 0.1% or 0.2%more. To the probs. mentioned by ppl here I'd add if you try to do a lot of switching, docts. will certainly get lost sooner or later.

I have said my say on this and about

the post office in other threads such as
    Money Laundering Regulations
(Tho I don't understand how, if it's supposed to be caused by government requirements AL and, you say, Scarborough can open you an account without this palaver, the rest can't, and Barclays even needs a visit to a branch in person.)

However I can ask the more experienced if they agree with my impression: over a period of a few years the best providers nearly always come from the same half-dozen to ten ING, AL,… So in case something becomes competitive again and you want to move money back again, never totally close an account unless you really need to sweep the money elsewhere. (But maybe you should retouch them every couple of years else they'll be considered dormant and be euthanised?)
And whenever the utilities kindly offer to save you trouble by not sending paper bills don't take advantage. (I don't know why I always seem to be receiving and filing these bills, then can never find one less than three months old when needed.)
Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.

It's for this reason I have decided not to opt for the paper free version of my own bank statement. Even though you can download and print your own, it doesn't have your own address on it as proof of where you live. At least mine with Lloyds doesn't.
