Hi
I went to one of Tesco extra ones in Essex. The service was ok, the eye test was done in 4 min indeed! They refused to give me the prescription as they said I should pay for it if I want to have it! Do you think I should go back and demand them to give me the numbers and measurements?
Many thanksBe nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
Thunderbird I would go back. You are entitled to your prescription no matter how much you did or didn't pay for the eye test.
I personally haven't bought glasses at the opticians in 2-3 years now I usually get my prescription (usually end up paying £20 for it) and then order from glassesdirect who are fantastic. And cheap. Did I mention cheap?
I'll have a look in Tesco's glasses range as it'll be my first time in their opticians but I doubt I'll leave with more than my perscription in hand. I'm booked in for Sunday... reading other comments I hope it's more than 4 minutes or I'll be paying for a real eye test elsewhere.0 -
You can always get the eye test and get your glasses elsewhere. The original post is slightly wrong - you don't 'often' have a right, you always have a right to get your prescription and go elsewhere. To quote from the Tesco site: 'If not you can ask your optician to provide a copy as you are entitled to it.' Of course, the shop where you go also has the right to refuse to serve you, but they'd be pretty silly to do so. Or you can get your glasses online - if you don't need varifocals or bifocals, this is usually the easiest and cheapest way.0

I only noticed this offer last Friday, but phoned up the local Tesco Extra that afternoon and was told I could go almost any time on Saturday. They asked for my postcode, but didn't say I was too far away (about 7 miles- but this is the nearest one).I had the test and I couldn't find any fault with it - as thorough as any other I've had. It must have lasted a good three - quarters of an hour, with a good discussion about what glasses I need for work. No real pressure to buy there and then (another assistant took me through all the available options) and I didn't have to ask for the prescription. Don't forget to ask for your Clubcard points - I nearly forgot! All in all, I was quite impressed.
The free eye test offer finishes tomorrow (Tuesday) but you might still get in if you are lucky. Their offers on varifocals and the bogof still have a while to run.0 -

My daughter had a free eye test at our local Tesco (Ely, Cambs). She asked for her prescription but was refused as they said they would keep it on file for her in case she decided to purchase new glasses.Hardly fair as she wasn't told this before the examination and nowhere is they any posters or leaflets giving this info. I also had a free eye test but did purchase 241 glasses from them. However the following week when my daughter went to have her test the optician decided to discuss my eye test with her. Thought this is private so do not go to Tesco if you want your business kept private.
They must, must, MUST provide you with your prescription under the data protection act. They cannot withhold this information - go back and demand it. It's a very sneaky trick opticians play on unsuspecting customers, forcing them to purchase from themselves. You are legally entitled to it, tell them that!0
