Want Sky channels - which service to choose?!

Options
Hi All,

I am with Talk Talk, which means I have to stick with them for at least another year, if not 18 months (I have just moved home and I think if you move they start another 18 month contract). I really want to have some of the Sky channels, e.g. Sky 1, MTV and Living. So far I have looked into Sky + which apparently costs £30 installation fee, £100 for the sky + box and £100 to upgrade my wall socket (as I live in a flat) to the Sky + wall socket, plus the usual monthly fee.

I have also looked into Virgin Media and BT but both require you to have their own phoneline to have their cable channels, which seems like a pointless cost as I already have a Talk Talk phone line. So I would have to pay about £10 a month for the phone line, the monthly fee for the channels and the money for the v+ or bt recorder box.

Does anyone know if there are any other cable / satellite providers out there, who allow you to use your own phone line to get their TV service with channels as above?

Would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks!

Sky have an offer on just now where you get the Sky+ HD box for £49, free installation and there's no need to upgrade your 'wall socket'. The Sky installer brings the cable straight through the wall to your Sky box. I think you can get a basic channel package for £16 a month.

I notice you have moved to a flat and have already got a sky socket on the wall. Is this from an existing dish or is there a communial dish (1 dish for the whole block). This may make a difference. What sort of flat is this and how high up? Is your flat south faceing? I only ask as Sky may be unable to install and you may need an independant or alternitavely if its a communial set up nagotiate with the management company for the extra feed.

if you are getting the hd channels that is an extra £10 per month subscription but if you order on line you get one month hd sub free.

Hi thanks all for your advice. It was a communal dish, which means you cannot order online. I ordered through Sky though and got a half price box (if I had realised it would be free a week or so later I would have waited!). But then I still have to pay another company £100 to upgrade the socket which means it turns out pretty expensive. It's the only way to do it though it seems in flats so I have opted for that and will be getting the socket upgraded tomorrow. Now I'm just looking forward to enjoying all the channels that Sky offers. Thanks again! :)
