Please help me to understand sky plus+!!!!

Options
Just posted this somewhere else by mistake so apologies if anyone's had the misfortune to read it twice! About to buy new tv from tesco direct and saw the deal for free sky plus (and free installation i think). can anyone help me to work out if it's worth me having. Already got freeview, pay £15 broadband tiscali and standard BT phone line. I know i need to change this but not sure if i can get it all through sky and end up saving money. do i need to connect to their phone line? if i take their broadband is it wireless? i really don't understand any of this and would just like someone to explain! Would like to buy today as double clubcard points finishing today!

The installation may be free, but you still need to sign up for the monthly TV package. As far as I know the cheapest TV package is £16 a month.

If you also sign up for free evening and weekend calls through sky you get free broadband including a wireless router. The BB is capped (I can't remember the limit but provided you don't play on-line games or download a lot of films/videos it is sufficient. If you go over the limit, though, it gets expensive. I am on-line all day on internet and e-mail and have only gone over the limit when my son came and usd bbc i-player)

do i need to connect to their phone line?

You keep your BT phone line, but be aware that if you go to sky for your free calls, you will pay for 0870 and 0845 calls which are free on BT during the free evenings and weekend period, and MUCH cheaper at other times. So if this is an issue for you it could be an extra expense

if i take their broadband is it wireless?!

    Yes

One final point - sky+ is brilliant. You can record programmes easily and set it to automatically record every episode in a series. I wouldn't be without it now.

    Hope this helps

You still need a BT line for the broadband. From my understanding if you take up Sky Talk, I think the broadband is free/considerably reduced.

Tiscali internet is rubbish, Sky's service is better and does come with a wireless router.

I won't say anymore, as there are better people to advise you on here.

There is a cap apparently, but if you go for the £10 a month package its something like 300gb. I doubt many normal users are going to go anywhere near that!

I think if you check the deal carefully what you actually get is a "free" Sky+HD box. To benefit from Sky HD you will need to subscribe.

Can't work out for you if it is a good deal or not you would need to compare the different Sky packages.

Any broadband connection can be made wireless by adding a wireless router, ie when broadband comes into your home on the phone line it is up to you whether to connect your computer with or without wires.

Yes it is only the box and installation which is free. I know i'd need to pay the subscription but was just hoping someone had already done the tricky bit and worked out a good deal. Thanks for all your help. Please keep the advice coming!

If you want to subscribe to Sky then it is worth having

Look at the various Sky packages on their website to see what costs are involved
do i need to connect to their phone line? You can stay continue to pay line rental to BT but it is slightly cheaper with Sky if i take their broadband is it wireless? It can be as can everyone's i really don't understand any of this and would just like someone to explain! You can always go for the Sky+ and change the other bits later when it suits you

Don't forget that you also need a phone line in the 2nd room as with multiroom, both boxes have to be connected to the same phoneline at all times, not just for 12 months.

We disconnected our multi room from the phone line as soon as the engineer left the house and that was two years ago.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
