I had a Sky Television subscription a while ago, BUT I am no longer a customer of theirs & therefore I just receive the free channels. I have the old viewing card inserted to receive some of the free channels as for some reason I need it.

Sky keeps advertising on tv that there is a new card on its way for their customers, does that mean I won't get some of the free channels that I need my card for???

I just wondered why you need the card for free channels and if this card is made inactive (even for free channels) after all subscribers have had their new cards??

    (Channel 5 / Sky 3 / ??)

Yes the old card will be "killed" after switch over.

You don't need a card for any Free to Air (FTA) channels but you do for Free to View channels (FTV). FTV channels are broadcast encripted presumably due to broadcasting rights and hence you need the encription key to watch it which is what is stored on the card.
