Is "Employment Support Allowance" payable to anyone with a disability dependant on savings or is it dependant on contributions ?
ie) If I can get a doctors certificate to say that I am unfit for work should I receive it ?
Plus - I am being made redundant at the end of the month and will be receiving several months pay in lieu of notice - I have been told (by my DEA) that I can receive this benefit from day one - if I get a doctors certificate - is this correct ?

Similar situation as me really. I work part time and have to get doctors note to get my ESA (Plus im also due to be made redundant in 6 weeks time)
ESA I think (The one im on anyway) is based on how much you earn, i can earn 16hrs/£92 a week and recieve ESA
I wont be getting anymore benefit that im aware of when im made redundant, the part time wages are a top up
How much do you work at the moment?Make £10 a day Challenge June - £1700 -

Like its predecessor (I/B) esa is payable if you have the correct n.i. contributions(cont.based),there is also income based esa which isnt reliant on n.i. but is means tested.
You should be able to claim from day one if you have a sick note from GP.however you will be sent an esa50 form which may then require a medical, depending on this will be how much esa you receive or if you are assessed as fit for work and transfered to jsa.0 -

Hi,
At the moment - I work full time (42 hours) - but as of the end of the month - I will be working zero hours - I have been working for 29 years - so will have built up a fair allowance to contribution based ESA - I assume ?0 -
Job centre told me that ESA is contribution based only - do they know their @rse from their elbow?Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
48 down, 22 to go
Low carb, low oxalate Primal + dairy
From size 24 to 16 and now stuck...0 -
It may well be contribution based only
This is what I am trying to discover
and if it is - is there any limit to savings allowed ?0 -
This thread shows many good reasons why benefits threads should be moved to the Benefits board.
I'm sure the BG said that she was moving them ...Gone ... or have I?0 -

As Woodbine has already said there are 2 types of ESA, one contribution based and one means tested.
ESA (Contribution based) replaced Incapacity Benefit. Savings and other income into household has no effect.
ESA (Income Related) replaced Income Support for incapacity which is means tested i.e. you have to have less income than the Government says you should live on and you have less than £6000 in savings (or a reducing payable amount if up to £16000 in savings).
Permitted work rules are the same for everyone which means if you are capable, and with the approval of the Job Centre, you can earn up to £92 for less than 16 hours per week for a period depending on your circumstances as detailed in the rules. It has no bearing on what you previously paid in or earnt.0 -
What are the rules concerning CONTRIBUTION BASED ESA ?
I am being made redundant in 3 weeks time - with a fairly large lump sum - I have paid 29 years of NI contributions and am receiving Medium care DLA - What am I likely to receive and when am I likely to be allowed to start claiming (I am being paid 6 months in lieu)
I understand that "anyone" is allowed to claim 6 months worth but have been recommended to get a doctors certificate to allow me to claim "straight away" ?0 -
i think to cliam ESA u will have to be sign off sick by your gp and then you will be able to start claiming the ESA at the rate of 64.50 pounds/ a week during the main phase then you will get a supplement which will vary on the group you are put in .
i can tell you claiming ESA is difficult and quite a tiring process , before filling the ESA 50 form make sure you have help form the CAB or welfare advisor .

This "NEW DEAL FOR DISABLED PEOPLE" doesn't fill me with confidence
To start with - the link to the website http://www.newdeal.gov.uk/nddp/ is down
And when I checked my area on the front page - it gives www.seetec.co.uk/nddp as the email address to contact them on - sorry but this is a website address NOT an email address
And I can't phone them either
