I think this is something I could get into. How did you go about it if you don't mind me asking?
It was in Tokyo when I was teaching English as it fitted in nicely with the gaps in the classes. I doubt that helps you - sorry!
Sometimes I got the same piece I had rewritten to proofread and was amazed at how they had ignored most of my corrections!
I haven't tried it in the UK as I'm a full time Engineer although when I retire I might try again if I get any contacts.

If you really hate the sales side, have your thought about hiring somone on a commision only basis, so you only pay them if they get you deals?
good luckDon’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.

I used to make a good living proofreading as mistakes jump out at me without having to read all the words!

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: For legal reasons I have to discourage swapping, buying and selling on the forum (please see this rule). While it can be a very useful way of saving money it relies on a certain amount of trust between members and as such can cause problems (and has in the past). I set up in business about 6 months ago after ten years in my field of graphic design, as I took voluntary redundancy when it was offered to me, but so far I have only been making about £350 a month profit.
I had some savings which are just about gone now and I am really panicking that I am going to fail, as being a self-employed designer has always been my goal.
Yesterday I spent all day on the phone trying to get new customers (which I absolutely hate doing as I am rubbish at it) after 50 calls I got 2 possible customers but one of them doesn't have an office, and as I work from home he wants to meet at a hotel which I am a bit worried about. The second possible customer sounds fine but now I am worrying that if I get business I am not going to be good enough.
I would like to join a networking club like BNI but my local chapters all have designers/printers I also doubt I could afford to join. I am waiting to see if my business plan has been accepted by the Prince's Trust - if it is will that help?
I think I might have made a huge mistake0 -
I haven't looked on here in a while and when I did I was delighted that the posts were still being read, so much so I have decided to give you an update:
Business is going great, I know these are the crazy busy months but I am working really hard right now to cover the quieter times.
The business is now being supported by the Prince's Trust, who gave me a loan and a mentor and I have just got a grant for £500 to spend on some new technology and advertising.
I have also been freelancing for two ad agencies and created a more steady income from my client base, all of whom have done repeat business with me. I have got much better at cold calling, I still hate it but needs must at desperate times, although I have realised that there are better times to do this i.e. not the week before Christmas, lunchtime etc.
I didn't join the BNI or FSB but may in the future, I have joined a cheaper networking club which only meets once a month and has really helped, they have featured me in their magazine and this generated lots of interest.
So all in all things have smoothed out a bit over the last few months and I am really pleased to have stuck with it. It was such a big step to take in the first place that I am not turning back now.
Thanks for all your support.:DMurphy's No More Pies Member No. 28 on hold0 -
