I've been bridesmaid a few times and I've never been made to wear a dress I hate though I did object to the floral bonnet when I was flower girl:o.
I have to say that purple/lilac isn't a colour anyone could pull off and if she's your onlhy bfridesmaid couldn't you give her more input on the colour? It doesn't matter if it doesn't match oyour colour theme as no one really notices the bridesmaid and the colours are always different in the wedding picture anyway.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Tell her your other favourite colour is baby blue.
Her choice :cool:0 -
Dump the bridesmaid!!
Twice I have been a bridesmaid, the first time I loved the colour but hated the style, the second time I loved the style and hated the colour and yes both times I paid for the dress. I was deeply honoured that I had been chosen and totally respected their choice, after it will be you looking at the wedding pictures in 40+ years time not her!
So shes offering to pay p&p, your paying for the dress, a dress which she wants to use at a later date.
I sound harsh................put nicely to her that this is the colour you have set your heart on to co-ordinate with everything else. Explain that if she doesn't like the colour from the Landly Brides, then she will really have to make an effort within the next couple of weeks to choose a pattern and fabric to give your Aunt time to make it or if SHE would prefer just choose her own dress, pay for it and be a normal family guest. You would love her to be bridesmaid but totally understand if she chooses to step down................sorted x:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:0 -
I second everyone's views - your colours, your style, your desicion, your day!!
She should be thankful you're having her as a bridesmaid at all espesh when your letting her choose things!
I'm a bridesmaid at my sis in law's wed next year and if she wants me to wear a shell suit, i'll wear a shell suit (i'd die a little inside but nevertheless i'd still wear it!).
Tell her to like it or lump it!! It's the biggest day of your life not hers.Debt which IS NOW GONE before 31.12.2011: CC - GONE!!! :j Loan: GONE!! :j

thanks for all your replies the've made me smile.
the reason the colour is important to us is due to the dress i've picked

as the colour will be in my dress the plan was to make the bridesmaid dress in the same colour. and the men would have ruched ties with their kilts to match. she assumed she could keep the dress, we had planned to resell it to recoup some of the money.
we let her choose the dress, she wanted a strapless one, my only stipulation was that it was to be long.
she chose this dress http://www.landybridal.com/Product/Pro1599.html
landy don't do the colour she wants and we have already bought other things in a similar shade to numbers 39 and 23 on this colour chart

i'm not too fussy about it being a perfect match as long as it is similar but the colour she wants is a very dark purple.
i'm feel that it's our wedding day and she will only have to wear it for a few hours. i wouldn't dream of causing her this hassle if it was her getting married. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -
Those shades are lovely - I would say that they are purple rather than lilac! Especially 23, so I can't understand her problem! Maybe it's something deeper than just a dress.
We decided on flower girls (all 7 of them!) so no adult bridesmaids for us! Hope you sort it soon & without too much stress!"Normal is not something to aspire to - it is something to get away from" - Jodie Foster0 -
When I got married in 2001 I had my bridesmaids in a really dark purple. Mainly because I saw the dresses from the other side of the shopping centre and had to have them. They were winter ball dresses. They were a kind of 2 tone black/ purple. Apparently when they walked into the church people thought they were black until they got further up the aisle.
My wedding was in June and there were murmurs from some people about the colours. We stuck with it and amazingly when we turned up on the day, nearly everyone was wearing Lilac! It was almost as though we'd asked people to wear purple but we hadn't. The bouquets had thistles in them and were fabulous. We had an awful lot of raised eyebrows everywhere when we said we were having purple because it was really uncommon for weddings. After our wedding it became really popular- don't know why.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say in my roundabout way is that a deep striking purple will look good. Even so, selfish moo! I wore a revolting tomato soup red for my best friends wedding. With gold stilettoes. DH told me I looked like a tranny.Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
Those dresses are gorgeous. I think shes been really selfish, her dress is gorgeous and its not like you are asking her to wear bright green with orange spots, i've got my swatch booklet in front of me and the colours are lovely yes they are not dark dark purple but they are certainly not light lilac, I think that 23 is the darker one and will look lovely in the BM dress you have choosen.
Be firm and tell her this is what you want and its upto her if she chooses to be your BM. Has your mom said anything or is she trying to stay out of it?0 -
She needs to grow up and remeber its your day not hers. How can she be so selfish??0
