jeannieblue I said to him yesterday about leaving the other tooth and he said he may as well get it over and done with

Just because this happened with tooth number 1 it isn't certain to say it will happen with tooth number 2.

Of course I would be a fool to say it wont either

Yeah thanks for that I think he'll go ahead and start it as the next appointment was for August.
Well he's up and so far not taken any painkillers but says its sore...so to me now it just sounds like the 'normal' soreness:confused:He managed 5K on the exercise bike and still standing so its looking good!!;)

Hope your hubby is feeling a bit better . Not sure what you mean by start of a root canal treatment. Did the dentist remove the root with something that looked like a barb and then put in a temp dressing? Did hubby have an abcess previously which has killed the tooth ie it's going black and so they plan is to remove root and crown? He may need some antibiotics if there is some infection around.

Right I asked him and he said the tooth was broken but not sore, the dentist done the root canal treatment and on Friday he is putting a pin in and rebuilding the tooth????? Sounds to me as if the tooth was knacked?? When you look at the tooth there is white filling in it. No he didn't have an abcess, the tooth is white not black....so it sounds like the root treatment is actually finished then eh? I'm confused!!:rotfl:

He is defo so much better today, still getting twinges but he hasn't had as many painkillers. So surely it can only get better eh? Fingers crossed!!;)

jeannieblue, thats exactly how I felt last night, he was freaking me out!!So thought I'd come on here and get some sensible advice from you guys!!:D:o

Could you imagine if he had to see a dentist late last night and then it turned out it was a normal pain, how bad would we (me and hubby) have felt??:o

I just finished root canal treatment a few days ago. It took 3 appointments over a 6 week period to sort it out.

At the first appointment, the dentist pack the tooth with a white 'dressing' and prescribed me some antibiotics - he said that after the removal of the nerves (which he had just done), there was a chance that infection could set in and to keep the antibiotics with me and start taking them at the first sign of pain. Luckily I didn't need to take them but even after my last appointment, he said again that there was still a risk of infection and to take the ABs if I have any pain and call the dentist ASAP.

Hope your hubby gets sorted soon.

Really? I think what he'll do is if it carries on being okish, he'll HAVE to mention about antibiotics to the dentist on friday for the other tooth!!...Mind you it wouldn't get better without ABs would it?:confused:it would be geting worse if there was an infection??

Its just weird the amount of pain he was in since Thursday..and today not as bad...his friend had it done with no pain and my friend got it done with NO numbing injection!!!!:eek: Whats that about?lol

Antibiotics shouldn't be prescribed routinely for patients having root fillings.

Occasionally they may be indicated, if a tooth is badly infected when work begins, but they should never be prescribed 'just in case'.

In your hubby's case poppyolivia, it hasn't been infection that's caused the problems, just inflammation caused by the irritation of all the mucking about inside the tooth (possibly combined with the male pain & suffering threshold!! :D) which has settled down all by itself. Antibiotics wouldn't have made any difference here.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thank you, he's away to work right now and he says its still tender but the greyness from has face has gone and the shakes have stopped...so sounding all good!!..He said last night it reminded him of when he had the flu years ago, but with toothache too??? (mmmmmm man flu;))
I'll tell him not to mention anitbiotics to the dentist then, but he can mention it was a killer and maybe they will tell him more about pain and how to control it, although reading this he reckons he's an expert now!!;):D

Pain from the sinus can be referred to the teeth.
If you look at a radiograph of the upper jaw, you can see the roots of some of the upper teeth are very closely related to the sinus space. So Bad colds and flu can cause toothache, even though there isn't actually anything wrong with the teeth.
Agree with toothsmith too," Just in case" antibiotics isn't really a good idea generally, but I will sometimes do it if my patient is about to hop on a plane to outer mongolia or something..
Gordon Brown was in the papers having had a root treatment with no local, but essentially if the tooth is completely dead you don't need it, for much of the treatment. I always prefer to numb though as some parts can still be tender. I use a heated filling material for example, and sometimes a little of the sealer can get pushed beyond the tooth when we fill the canals. Not enough to cause serious problems, but enough to make you jump a little.
