Hi there,
My husband has had the START of root canal treatment on Thursday and ever since he has been in very bad pain, is this normal? He is feeling faint and weak with it....I have googled it and all pain seems to be about AFTER the treatment is finished....
He has taken co-dydramol and its not helping. His next appointment is Friday but he's going loopy, hasn't slept alot either.....will it get better or is this part of the process???
Can you even see a dentist at weekends?
(NHS)
Can I just add he didn't have any trouble with this tooth but he had an xray and they decided to do it.
Thank you for any help x

Thank you, he's drifting off to sleep...do I leave him cause hes knackered or phone...will 100% phone in the morning (if still the same) if not before...(thought NHS direct was the doctors but obviously not so thank you for that)
Thing is he never gets ill, never takes days off work and has to take co-dydramol for back pain..so this has thrown us!!:o
Many thanks x
You know what? Think I'll phone and see...thanks xYou may walk and you may run

Maybe if he is used to taking the table he is becoming less amenable to it, meaning he needs to take more than a person who was unused to it. I would go see the on call dentist tomorrow,Friday is a longway away, and there are few worse pains than toothache.0

I went to phone Nhs direct and he said not too as he doesn't want to bother people at this time of night...Grrrrrrr!! I will phone in the morning, he says the shakes have stopped and he feels warm nowHopefully thats a good thing lol
Yeah I can see what you mean about the tablets....
Maybe its normal to feel like that and tomorrow will be better, he's been saying that since Thursday night:rolleyes:..
Thank you everyone for your help....I think hes going to take different pills
before bed and hopefully that will take him through till morning...
Thing is on Friday they are finishing of the tooth and starting on another back one:eek:...oh the joys;)You may walk and you may run

Definitely call NHS direct - there are dental surgeons at hospitals after all. And they are the best to advise.
Let us know how he gets on.Genie

Put a couple of 24 re runs on to ease the pain.....not the current series, seeing as Jack is in dire straits, might not help!!!
Good luck, hope he improves tomorrow.0 -
I'd leave the back tooth for a while!
Careful re upping dosage of tabs or changing them. I'd still call NHS Direct - can you not hide in another room whilst making the call??Genie

post op pain after root treatment is common, sods law states it is more common on teeth that were symptom free before we start work
The better painkillers for this are anti inflammatory ones like Ibuprofen, rather than Co dydramol, (codeine is a bit rubbish for dental problems) but of course if he is taking them already you need to be careful about dosages etc. I regularly advise my patients to stagger plain paracetamol with ibuprofen however. Ie halfway between doses of ibuprofen take paracetamol.
Never worry about ringing NHS direct, they are there 24 hours for a reason, you wont be waking anyone up, however out of hours cover for dentistry is very patchy. Realistically speaking no one will actually see you unless you have uncontrolled bleeding or an increasing swelling.0 -

Thank you so much for that, there is no swelling or bleeding (that we can see). I asked last him last night about the co dydramol and he said hes allowed 8 in 24 hours and he has been trying not to take them for his back if he can help it. I will tell him about the ibuprofen and paracetamol.
We kinda had an arguement about phoning Nhs Direct last night as he said all they will say is to see an out of hours dentist and we would be waking someone up for that and thats not on etc. He's old fashioned in the sense that he went to see the doctor in January about not being able to walk right because of his back (he had to roll outta bed and crawl down the stairs) and the doctor said something along the lines of he should be on disability etc and his job is like something from the dark ages (warehouse ie heavy lifting no sitting all day apart from half hour lunch:eek:) But he says she knew nothing:o and working is the best thing for a dodgy back which is true but he should have taken time off.
He said that if its still that sore (tooth) he will phone in the morning (today) he's still in bed and he has had a good sleep so thats promising, its good though that you said it is common because in my head I had him with blood poisoning and everything:o:rotfl:But I know if I tell him that he'll not do anything about it, which in away is good cause it saves someone outta of hours seeing him.
jeannieblue I said to him yesterday about leaving the other tooth and he said he may as well get it over and done with
poet123 :rotfl:I wouldn't mind watching 24, I think thats fab advice!!lol
I will keep you posted but I have a feeling he's going to play it down because of me shouting at him last night:o I was saying that if he was that sore he would let me phone for him and he must be faking it etc ( ok I'm cruel and I honestly feel really bad saying that as you can see he's no right) what is it with men??
thanks for all the advice folks its honestly appreciated xxxYou may walk and you may run
