The idea is to buy a balanced portfolio appropriate to your risk. Without lower risk asset classes like fixed interest, corp bonds, global bonds and comm property, the portfolio would go towards the higher risk end.

Remember that when things go down, it is the low risk areas that continue to make the money. Put too much into one area and you handicap growth, put too much into the other and you increase the volatility of your portfolio.

Also remember that income is the current fashion and there are already signs that it swinging towards growth again.

Phew!!! It's no good. I'm just going to have to take early retirement in order to fit in all the research required to avoid making a complete a**e of myself.

Considering the following, but still looking into it all -
Inv. Perp High Income, Rathbone Income, Jupiter income, Artemis European growth, JPMorgan US, Aberdeen emerging markets, Artemis capital. Sounds quite impressive until you find out I'm only investing £100/month.

Before you get too excited, you are aware that virtually all the fund supermarkets only allow £50 per fund?

Nice post carnet and I have to agree to most points you make. I did a £50pm isa for someone last week and used a fund of funds for it. It was the only real way to get asset allocation and access to 13 other funds within a single fund. At least 2 of the funds marrioa mentions further up were within that FoF.

Thanks dunstonh and carnet for your posts.

There are so many "products" out there, but I am determined to find out as much as I can, and listen to your expert opinions. I am realising that I am NEVER going to know everything before I make a decision and I find that quite hard to accept.

The next stage for me is to investigate your suggestions.

Thanks again. Your knowledge is impressive and your willingness to share your experience is very much appreciated.

    Gosh, very impressive. :T

You do 40+% every year, do you?
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

I'm going to show my ignorance again.

Hi carnet, what does GEM and AP stand for?

One of the balanced funds I've found is the Aberdeen Balanced Management Fund, and another is the Merrill Lynch Asset Allocator plc - Balanced.

I obviously misread the £50/mnth to mean I could divide it up between funds - silly me.

Haven't got round to finding out what fettered means, but I'll get there.

What does LOL mean. I've seen it a few times in posts and it can't mean "lots of love", which is the only thing that springs to my mind.

"lots of love". Hmm, sounds like the relationship many of the regulars have here ;)

  • Carnet,

When you say your return is 40% per year has that been over 20 years?
