I'm looking for the cheapest 42" inch TV

Be slightly wary of VERY cheap LCD TVs - look for the Contrast Ratio figure - it will be in the specs. I've recently been out and bought a new TV and was quite shocked how bad some are.. Tesco's had a 37inch widescreen 1080p TV, with a contrast ration of 1200:1*... You could barely see the picture in the shop lights so i reached around the back, found the menu buttons to raise the contrast - only to find it was set to full already!!!! - I'd say you need 10,000:1 or better for it to be reasonable. - the one I got in the end was 15,000 to 1. (note: plasmas are naturally much brighter so you'll see a much higher figure, but will 'burn in' if you them set too high!)
*The contrast ration is the different between the 'brightest white' it can display and the 'darkest black' - important for a well defined, sharp, bright image - anything less than 8,000 will just appear very 'dull'. 1,200:1, just avoid.
edit: on the 19" tv mentioned above.. the main stock of 19"LCD TVs are pretty useless as TVs, due to the sound as the poster says.. however they make great computer monitors for a spare room as you can also watch TV on them. (make sure you can set your graphics card to 1440x900 first though or it will appear awful.0
