Cheaper Way to Text (Abroad)

Apologies if this has been posted before but...

My mobile network (O2) charges 16p for an international text (I get loads of UK ones included in my contract) and most of the online free text services don't allow you to text overseas mobiles. I was therefore interested to find that it is possible to text international numbers in certain countries using MSN Messenger for about 7p-8p a go, saving 50% in the process!

OK, so it's not as handy as you have to text using MSN Messenger, rather than direct from your mobile, but it seems competitively priced. This is how it works:
  • You add a mobile number for an MSN contact (they do not need to be a Messenger user)
  • You pay in advance for a pack of messages from MSN
  • You send a text to your contact using Messenger
  • Your contact replies and you get the response via MSN Messenger straight away, or (if you're offline) the next time you sign in
It apparently works for mobiles in the USA, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, although admittedly, I haven't tried it yet.

You can get the following packs of messages by credit card;
  • 25 messages for £1.99 (7.96p each)
  • 50 messages for £3.99 (7.98p each) cheaper to get two lots of 25!
  • 150 messages for £9.99 (6.66p each)
These packs would also be good value for occasional texters of UK numbers (if you'd normally pay more than 8p to text), but for regular UK texters, it's probably cheaper to get an add-on text pack or a tariff with an inclusive text allowance.

You can also get 15 MSN Messenger text messages for £1.50 (10p each) and pay by premium SMS or premium phone number.

I'd be interested to hear how people get on with using the service...
