Indeed it is and as equally valuable or not as anyone else's on the thread.
As you rightly say it's a matter of personal choice-to me it's worth paying £10 a year to take my child abroad -to you-it isn't. I don't perceive it as bad value-you do. We're all different. California or Camber Sands-to me no contest-to you-it is :) Nothing wrong with either opinion. Hope you get some decent weather :)

Thanks for that as I didn't know. So when my son is 17/18 and still using a child passport will he be able to travel on his own / with mates as I'm sure he won't want to come away with mum at that age ;).

mmm wouldn't be too sure. Mum paying can be quite attractive.

But yes he will be able to travel on his own.
  • Hi all,
I am looking for some info here.
In May 2004 I applied for passports for my 3 kids who were all under 16 years.
I paid in 2004 the full price for a 10 year passports which
was an initial 5 years till 2009 then a new passport would be issued with an updated picture which would then cover the remaining 5 years from 2009 till 2014.
Upon contacting the passport office about the renewal of the 3 passports I was told that they had changed the rules since 2004 and each of my kids (now over 16) would have to submit the full fee again.
They couldn't answer my question about the missing 5 years that was paid for upfront, they just kept saying the rules had changed.
    Has anyone any idea's?

Seems you have been misled or misunderstood the rules. According to the Passport website only passports issued before March 26th 1998 could be extended free of charge, see the quote below

Since 26 March 1998, passports issued to children under the age of 16 years are valid for 5 years and may not be extended. Five-year passports issued before this date are extended free of charge.
this was taken from paragraph 1.5 HERE
  • Hey Weekend Warrior,

I'm with you. My daughter's passport was issued in June 2004 and I was told exactly the same, that I was buying a ten year passport and simply needed to update the photo in 5 years, so was a colleague of mine.

I just wanted to reassure you that you weren't going mad, can we get Martin to investigate this please? After all we paid for a ten year passport at the time! and just because they've changed the rules for neew applications our 'terms' shouldn't alter!

Hi weekend warrior and wellies1, Im in exactly the same position as you both.

My daughters passport was issued in 2005 and runs out in Feb next year, and the same as you both was told that after 5 years to send in new photos and get another 5 year passport issued free as we originally paid for a 10 year one, But when I contacted the passport office I was told the same thing, to apply for a new five year one and pay the fee. seem's unfair to me as they took the money for a 10 year passport, now they have changed the rules it seems totally unfair, where has my money for the other 5 years of passport gone? Surely they are breaking some sort of contract, going to try and find the original paperwork that they sent back with the passport hopefully this will prove that they should extend it for 5 years for free.
If they changed the rules in 2004 wasn't it nice of them to let us know !!

    Hi pjd328,

Your right it is a disgrace and a contract is a contract , if you have the original
paperwork then that is a start to fight them.
The passport office has a very long and ardious process for complaints and must be followed, once you start this process see if you can get advise off your local M.P. or staff who may take up your case.
My M.P. unfortunately is a waste of space, I am now however going to be taking this further as We recently had to stump up again for 3 passports.
Good luck and please keep me informed as to your progress especially if you have any tips or luck.

  • 2 years down the line and it is now £49 to renew a childs passport for 5 years!...really wouldn't mind paying the same as an adult one but would love to know how they justify making a childs more expensive!...It is certainly not for extra security checks,When I got my son his first passport....I had to provide the birth certificate (which I had been told to take but when I got there was told they didn't need it and didn't even look at it)! Basically they do it because they can
  • Oh how we get used to the high cost of things so quickly! £46 cheap? I don't think so. The true cost of such a booklet would be much less. After all it is much less than a paperback book with photos in it, and we provide the photos. Yes there is the cost of security checks. That would be fine if they actually did proper security checks!

Are you seriously comparing the cost of issuing a passport to that of printing a paperback? Each passport is unique. You cannot take a legal document and make 12,000 copies, as you would with a paperback book.

It's not about the cost of the ink and paper. It's the cost of the service. I'd like to think that they're doing 'proper' security checks, but if you have evidence to the contrary, I'd love to hear it.

Passports do not generate an income for the government, regardless of what your 'common sense' brand of evidence-free wisdom tells you. The money pays for the cost of issuing the passport. It also covers some of the costs of helping Brits abroad. I hope you remember this the next time your bag is stolen overseas. Oh, how we get used to being able to pick up the phone and call the consulate.
