Trailer numberplates...

You don't need a numberplate on the trailer so long as the vehicle's plate is visible.
It's also fine to take the numberplate off the car for the trailer.
To be legal you must have a proper numberplate, proper font, spacing, size, reflective backing, BS marks etc0 -

from more than a few meters it looks perfect. I even downloaded the correct font from the web site
If they were printed black, you could have save the drawing round and colouring in, by sticking clear fablon over them. The ink fades after a while though
but finding someone with a vinyl cutting machine is better still
I hadn't realised that font could be downloaded. I used Arial Bold, 320 pt. The letters are slightly wide, but it's ok0 -
OP, my local trailer hire place has blank yellow plates permanently fitted to their trailers. They have a thick felt tipped pen and routinely freehand write the plate. A little bit of solvent refreshes the plate ready for the next customer.

Do you have a colour photocopier at work?
No. Cos it means my boss would have to spend money. We have a fax machine which does poor quality b&w copies. Infact we have several old broken ones too cos he wont throw them away! He brought a saucepan in the other day to weld the handle back on! The pan itself looked about 20 years old...0 -

yeah i did that in the past, works also0 -
I understand its perfectly legal to take the number plate of the towing car and put it on the trailer. As long as the trailer is connected up.
But you might be more likely to be pulled over if the police spot the missing plate on the towcar!0 -
i would just make one as neat as possible
most trailers ive seen dont have working lights, missing mud guards, wrong or missing numberplates
all down to lazyness, i would hope they would get stopped before you0 -
Many years ago, as the then OH had pony, bought trailer type horsebox which still had number plate of prev owner's car at rear. Never did get round to putting my car's number plate on horsebox, must have travelled well over 2k miles and never stopped.
NB I POST THIS AS A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE NOT AS A RECOMMENDATION FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE CORRECT NUMBER PLATE ON TRAILERIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

Hi folks,
I'm a newbie here, and have just picked up this post via Google.
For info, the first statement above is wrong, but the second is correct. The relevant regulations are:
The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
Fixing of rear registration plates: vehicles registered on or after the relevant date
5.—(1) This regulation applies to vehicles, other than works trucks, road rollers and
agricultural machines, first registered on or after the relevant date.
(2) A registration plate must be fixed on the rear of—
(a) the vehicle, or
(b) where the vehicle is towing a trailer, the trailer, or
(c) where the vehicle is towing more than one trailer, the rearmost trailer.
So, the rearmost item in a towing combo must carry a number plate, but it's permissible to have no rear plate on the towing vehicle.
Btw, the "relevant date" for Great Britain is 1 October 1938.
Hope this helps!0 -
Take the rear plate off the car and put it on the trailer.
Just remember to swap it back when done.0
