I was thinking of using a pair so i could connect a pc upstairs to the router which is downstairs by the homeplugs, the upstairs pc is on wireless but im a bit sceptical about wireless plus its a bit slow. Do the mains sockets that i was going to plug homeplug into have to be on the same circuit for them to work

I got the devolo dlan 200mbps av stater kit from dabs.com a few months ago - 2 highspeed, HD plugs for £70.

Cheapest price I could find. Rock solid connection from router upstairs to xbox downstairs. No drop out or lag for online gaming.

    Good reviews posted on dabs.

I pretty sure I've read on here 'which ring' is irrelevant, because homeplugs use Neutral and Earth, both of which use their own single connection at the consumer unit.
I've not phrased it very well, but if it's wrong somebody will correct me.

    See http://www.homeplugs.co.uk/acatalog/faqs.html

im not too sure if the mains socket where my router islocated is on the same circuit as the 1 by my xbox, im guessing theyre not as the xbox is on the first floor and the router is on the ground floor

Yep read it and it says that as long as the rings are on the same fuse box then yes they will work, also ive only got the 1 mains socket where the 360 is plugged into and i use a 4 gang extension, is there a workaround as i cant plug a homeplug into a 4 gang extension

I have a couple of cheap 85Mbps homeplugs from ebuyer ..

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150039

Currently just under £50 a pair (although the price changes almost every day - I got mine a couple of months ago for £36.99).

Fantastic piece of kit - worked straight out of the box, and connecting at around 80Mbps (with one of them in an extension bar). With both of them in extension bars (one surge protected) the speed dropped to around 70Mbps but still absolutely rock solid connection.

    Highly recommended.
