In January I replaced my Peugeot catalytic convertor with a patterned part. Six weeks later my engine management light came on saying that cat was faulty. I spent several weeks trying to work out who was telling me the truth, and ended up deciding to have it replaced with a peugeot main part and get a refund on the faulty patterned part.

The work was carried out today and the garage that did it have said that they need to return a Peugeot orginal catalytic convertor or pay a £200 surcharge. It was back in January that I replaced it and it's long gone to the recycling tip.

What are my choices? Ebay - and hope whoever says they are selling a guenuine part is actually telling the truth? I see there is one for £35 Buy Now. I need to get this sorted quickly so don't want to do auction ones.
Or go round the breakers yards tomorrow - how easy will it be for my friend and I to recognise if it is a peugeot part?

I did initially try and get the part myself and was never told there would be a surcharge when I was quoted £280. But then it got too complicated so I instructed the garage who have done the work to source it from the main dealer.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!

A cat converter went to a recycling tip?! You realise people steal these from under cars as they're worth quite a bit of cash.....?!

Sounds like the car is under warranty?! If so I can't understand why when the original went faulty you got a pattern part fitted.

No it wasn't under warranty at all, I'd done 90K in a 7.5year old car and it had rusted away. Peugeot have got this obligation or something that when they supply a new catalytic convertor they want the old one back. If I had realised they were worth something I would never have taken it to the tip.

I'm bracing myself now with not knowing what to do when I go and pick the car up tomorrow, as obviously I'm going to need the car to go and source a catalytic convertor to avoid paying the surcharge, but they are going to want paying. Hopefully they'll give me some grace, I've been a customer of theirs for some years now and they know where I live!

Thats a new one on me. I'd ring customer services and explain that your a good customer etc and tell them to sort it because its stupid imo.

is your car a 307 ,my next door neighbours catalytic converter light comes on every six months i just disconect the battery for half an hour and hey presto fixed for another 6 months ,she was quoted about £800 from a garage that does lots of work on her car,but peugot are notorius for having electrical problems,if you search online you will see hundreds of cases of people replacing there cats only for the light to come back on a few weeks later

No 206, and yes I have read numerous stories of the problems. Thankfully mine don't appear to be the same.

The small garage I use will be charged £200 unless they send a peugeot cat back, so they will pass that £200 on to me unless I can supply one.

I initially replaced it in January as my exhaust fell off and the part was rusted with a hole in it. It had appeared on my MOT as an advisory notice for the last two years so I did expect it. I have broken down twice in the last month though not 100% sure if this was related to the cat. Peugeot advised in March when they did a diagnostic that the new cat was smaller and not capable and would therefore result in a loss of power and eventual failure of the MOT. The garage have confirmed that the cat is considerably smaller than a main part. The work has now been done and the new cat is on...so now I just need to settle up.

Just try pick up a genuine one off ebay and take it to somewhere that can fit cats. No point buying one then paying Peugot to supply and fit one when you'll have one.

It cost me £40 from the breakers yard, will deliver it to the garage next week. Hopefully that'll then sort it. I'm poorer in pocket but richer in knowledge!

if the car isnt in warranty then why do they need the old one back?
this sound like some kind of service exchange part, but i didnt think cats would be service ex?

could you ask them why and report back?
    ...work permit granted!

I did phone one branch of Peugeot last week and they informed me that all cats they sell have a £200 surcharge on them??? Perhaps I should phone them again...
