have just made a lot of internal transfers and didnt need to use this card reader for them, also set up a new internal transfer and didnt need to use the card reader, made an external transfer and had to use it.
Hope this is the way it stays, I can see the point of using it for external transfers but not internal ones...although it does make you wonder how secure our internet banking has been for all these years

My account makes me use the reader everytime I do anything regarding transferring or setting up payments. I had to transfer 0.97p to an external bank account and gave up in the end, as the reader kept failing. Instead I raided my penny jar.

If they continue to make you use the reader for every action, I won't be with them for long.

how strange, I was led to believe that I would need it for all transfers, but on logging in and going to the transfer money section there was a bit on the right hand side of the screen saying wouldnt normally be needed for existing internal transactins. I must admit I sent them a stern complaint email so maybe thats why mines different??? In it I told them I would either move accounts or start writing a smile current account cheque to each of my 6 different smile savings accounts and pay them in at the post office every month. I was starting to get prepared to move my accounts over to halifax but will hold fire for a little while....although they pay rubbish rates I cant help but like smile but if they make me use the reader for every transaction I will leave

If you don't like smile's readers, leave and join first direct...and get £100 for your trouble. Okay, their current account does not pay interest, but you can have a linked savings account that does.

Do you mean 97p? The system probably would struggle with values of less than 1p.

My OH was sent one of these for his normal cooperative bank account(not smile) every month on payday i transfer the money needed to cover the bills to my account (another coop account) and then pay all the bill, now with the introduction of this stupid reader he has to sort out the money himself and either transfer it to me or pay the bills direct. Many of you probably think whats the problem but a) when your used to this routine for many years its a pain to have to change it, and b) my OH is not great with money and i can see it tonight, going through the why do we owe that much and can't that be cut back etc etc where hes never even noticed before also i have to wait until tonight until the kids are in bed before i can sort the bills out and so taking up my evening as i can't leave him to do it himself or they would all be wrong.
Well theres my little moan for the day.
  • I have sent Smile a secure message to ask why but to date I haven't been requested to use my card reader?
Even this morning I made two transfers to outside accounts, £450 and a five figure sum, as usual they just went through without a problem or the card reader. So what's the point of me having it?
Is this happening to any other Smile account holders who have one of these readers?

At least it is not like Barclays were you need it to log on to internet banking too. I have been sent one and made an internal transfer after I got it and I did not have to use it.
  • I thought I'd got away with it, but is forced me to use the reader today for the first time :-( What a total pain!. Especially as my card don't work with the reader. It gives me 7 digits instead of 8, ring 01614771927 (saynoto0870) and am told they are sending me a new card.
    Great I don't think
So I use my OH account, thankfully her card works, but to make 5 payments I have to use it 5 times! Surely once is enough during a session?
Yes I've had enough, crap interest rates too.
I have sent them a secure message but think it is time to move on
I have been with them since 2000 but held my main savings at Cahoot.

The Nationwide and Co-operative Bank readers look pretty much identical. Does anyone know if it possible to use, say, the Co-op reader with my Nationwide card & Flex account? Would be handy then to keep one at work and the other at home.
