It's not unreasonable for transfers between accounts within the bank at all.

Large amounts of fraudsters will use hijacked accounts - "unwitting beneficiaries" - to receive funds.
Considering that transfers outside of Smile/The Co-operative Bank take three days*, they are likely much more vulnerable to this style of attack.

*Yes I know they have some FPS abilities, but not for the amount the average fraudster of this level is interested in.

I don't quite understand what you are saying.
Do Barclays use these card readers? How do the fraudsters get details of an account if the A/c holders never open phishing emails or buy on line with A/c details? How long does Barclays take to transfer cash from one of their accounts to one at a different bank? Just curious.

I've been a Smile account holder for many years and have been very happy with them until they introduced these card readers. Not for the first time, my account was blocked this morning and I had to ring their 0870 number. As keen as she was to help, the agent just said, "it shouldn't have done that". She set up the payment to an account I've been paying monthly for 8 years. So what used to take a few seconds was accomplished in over 20 minutes with no guarantee that it won't keep happening.

I do accept the sense of it for new payments and accounts but this routine every time I pay my credit card bill just isn't internet banking anymore. Any recommendations for a new currrent account?

I agree with all of you.

I have smile accounts and OH current is with co-operative. I needed to give him20 quid back so thought Id do as simple transfer ( we are financially connected with joint savings account with smile and we live in te same house) It would have been quicker to just go to the cash point to draw out the cash.It does annoy me a lot tbh.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

We introduced them first, you've got us to blame if you don't like them. ;)

Depends whether they're targeting a specific person or not.

If the receiving bank has Faster Payments, we will send up to £10,000 same day.

It's not necessary to use the 0870 number try 0161 477 1927 instead!

Ive just received my card reader this morning, to be honest it just seems a big pain in the rear! I make several transfer on payday to different smile savings account in my name (and in joint names), it seems that I have to generate a code on the internet site, put it in the card reader, get another code from the card reader and then put this code into the internet site... then repeat this, then repeat this and then repeat this.................
I like smile, I really do, I have been with them for years, I have stuck with them depite the really poor savings and current account rates....but this is probably the last straw. I can do the above every month, or I can write a smile cheque and pay it into a smile savings account using a smile envelope via the post office x how many savings accounts I have, which has got to cost smile more money (now I know that this means higher costs to the bank which would normally result in lower interest rates but to be honest with smile the interest rates really cant go much lower). Or I can just close all of my smile accounts and move to the Halifax where they will pay be £5 every month and give me better interest rates on my aco!!!!s

Just spoken with Smile and cards like mine that were issued in April 08 were one of the last where the chip won't work in a card reader. Any after that will have the card reader issued alongside.

I just dont get why they feel it is necessary to make me use the cardreader everytime I make an internal transfer, I wouldnt mind using it to set up new transfers but for internal transfers every month it just seems daft, I just dont see why someone who hacked into my account would would be bothered making transfers to my other accounts? I dont see what it would achieve? Smile also dont seem to be able to answer it

You need the card reader for internal transfers because otherwise it would open a loophole where a fraudster would only need one smile account with card access in order to swipe your dough.

but why would they move money from my current account to my savings account?
Maybe I havnt got the point, I can see that you would want to use the card reader to create/set up a transfer initially but I cant see how a fraudster would benefit from being able to move money to accounts already set up/verified
