02 Contract Phone/O2 PAYG Simcard

I've currently got an O2 PAYG sim (100 free minutes for £10 top up) but I'm thinking of buying an unwanted upgrade O2 contract phone from eBay. Would I be able to use my old PAYG sim in it?

Although I may yet be tempted to join T-Mobile Flext 20 tariff and get a D600 instead - thanks to greyster for the recommendation :D

As long as the phone is unlocked you should be able to use it.

The o2 PAYG Sim is in my phone at the moment, seems good. The T-Mobie Tariff has taken my eye though. Did look into it, call charges seem expensive...
  • Thanks highguyuk, I didn't realise the phone would have to be unlocked.
I've always been on PAYG, but for the past couple of years I've changed my phone every birthday so that's why I'm thinking about treating myself to a contract phone instead and get a free upgrade 18 mths down the line. Plus the T-Mobile deal currently gives you 25% off line rental for life.

    Decision, decisions

does it really need to be unlocked, I thought that would only apply if you wanted to use a different network or atleast thats how its always been in my experience.

It doesn't need to be unlocked as long as the sim card provider matches the phone provider.

But I thought because it was contract it would have to be unlocked.

To be honest, people on the Mobile Phone thread can help you unlock it free of charge, you might as well get it unlocked!
  • AFAIK, all newer PAYG sims can be used in a contract phone of the same network without the need for unlocking.
...and then the window licker said to me...

Unlocking is generally to allow a phone provided by one network to work with a sim from a different network. As littleredcorvette is planning to buy an O2 contract phone it should work fine with an O2 PAYG sim.
  • Thanks for all the replies - I'm still looking on eBay for a bargain O2 mobile :D
