Cheques

Hi

I'm not sure this is in the right section so please let me know and I'll move it to the right bit!

I remember Martin saying ages ago on Radio 2 that he has no need to actually physically step into a bank anymore) as it can all be done online/via phone etc.

I got a cheque for my birthday and went to put it in the bank yesterday - how can I do this without actually going into my bank? (I am with the HSBC) I would love never to have to go in there again!!!

Can't you pay these in at cash machines, therefore not having to go into the branch and queue up...

Post it in with a pre printed paying in slip if possible, or put your account number and sort code in a letter with the cheque. Always remember to add your sort code & account number on the back of the cheque that you are paying in and it will always find it's way to your account.

With Lloyds accounts you can hand he pay in envelope in at your local post office... as this is about uhmmmm... actually on my way out of the cul-de-sac I live in it's MUCH easier for me :) But yes I have been known to post cheques to the bank before now. Your bank should have details on where to send it etc on their website :)

  • I often pay cheques into my account by posting an envelope with the cheque and a covering note, or paying in slip, through the letterbox of my branch. This is done usually when I am on my way to work before the banks open. It's a method that has worked fine for me.

  • Completely forgotten I'd posted this!

Thanks for the replies, I will have to post them I think as my branch doesn't have one of those machines with the paying in cash machine (typical!)

    Thanks again!!

Isn't this is bit of cutting off your nose to spite your face? If you send a cheque through the post, make sure you keep a record of the cheque until you've seen confirmation the funds are on your account - what if the cheque was lost in the post? If the cheque was for a sizable amount, wouldn't you prefer to deliver it to the Bank in person to make sure it got there rather than trusting someone else? Not suggesting you should do it for every cheque but keep your options open.

I see what you are saying, My branch was quite big until they decided to cut the 5 cashires spaces down to 2 and then only ever have one person on there at any one time, so there is always a huge que and it takes forever to get anything done in there :) I was just after an easier option as I don't always have the time (or patience :D ) to stand there to put a cheque in!

Plus I was curious as to how to go about it seeing as Martin had said he never goes into a bank!!

I bank with HSBc and they are about a 15 minute drive from me. I opened an account with A&L who are just round the corner from me and I pay all mu chques in there. I try to leave the money in that account as a bit of savings.

I personally wouldn't post a cheque incase it gets lost in the post but putting through the door of the bank is a good idea - I used to work for a bank and people always used to do this.

People giving me cheques is quite annoying....Nationwide recently sent me one for £2.78...I posted it the deposit point in a Lloyds TSB to make it quicker.

I can't wait for the day when cheques disappear altogether as they are a pain in the behind.
