If you have an Alliance & Leicester current account, you can put your cheques in one of their special envelopes with a paying-in slip, and hand in at any Post Office. The envelopes then get collected and taken to Bootle in a van,so they shouldn't go missing.

I always post my cheques using a paying-in slip and a first class stamp, to both HSBC and First Direct (I have accounts with both) and have never had any problems with either.

I must admit though that when I received two very large cheques which I had to pay in to First Direct, I did drive down to my nearest HSBC Bank and pay them in over the counter. These were cheques for over £15K each, so I guess there's a limit of how much I am prepared to trust the postal system....

I forgot to mention, I always take a photocopy of the cheque and paying-in slip before I post them off, so I have a record of the cheque details and when it was sent, just in case anything does get lost!

At my HSBC, if you use the fast deposit machine it gives you a tiny photocopy of the cheque. It is only as wide as a normal receipt though, so you can't see much
