I used to buy sosmix for my vegetarian dd 20 years ago. It was the only veggie ready meal you could buy then. We quite liked it. I found it very good for making scotch eggs, and sausage rolls

Sosmix has been completely ruined, IMO. They changed the recipe so that it wasn't vegan, then changed it back again, but it's just so bland now, I don't bother buying it anymore :(

Sorry, I'm no help on homemade sausages, bt Tescos are currently selling Linda McM ones for 1.00 for 6, and Iceand always hav them for this price.

When I used it for sausage rolls I always mixed it with sage and onion stuffing for a better flavour.

Nothing like Cauldron sausage *drool* but I make these quite often, they freeze really well and the recipe isn't as fiddly as it sounds!
    Lentil sausages

    1 onion finely chopped
    1 celery stalk finely chopped
    1 red pepper finely chopped
    175g red lentils
300ml veg stock – may need a bit more
    1tbsp tomato puree
    ½ tsp marmite
    75g fresh breadcrumbs
    50g chopped nuts

Fry onion and celery in frylite for 3 mins, add pepper and lentils and cook for another minute. Add stock, puree and marmite, cover and cook for 20 until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Transfer to a bowl and add breadcrumbs and nuts, stir until well combined, season then leave to cool. Shape into sausages – makes about 12.
Spray with oil and either grill or fry for 8mins or bake for 20mins at 1800C

    Variations:
Hot chilli – add 1 red and 1 green chilli with the lentils and ¼ tsp Tabasco with the puree.
Herb and garlic – add 2 crushed garlic cloves and 2tbsp chopped herbs with the lentils.
Spinach and pinenut – add 100g chopped frozen spinach instead of the red pepper and replace the chopped nuts with pinenuts.
Mushroom – add 100g finely chopped mushroom instead of the pepper

Thanks, I will try this too.

I tried Asda's meat free 'sausage mix'. In a packet and a bit like sosmix in that you add water. It was edible but I think I'd add extra flavouring to it next time I try it.

I made sausage rolls with half the mix and they were nice!! I can't remember how much I paid but I think it was less than £1.

Thanks, I actusally bought this earlier. There were two sorts, I got the Linconshire one as I thought it might be better. It says it makes 8 sausages and was 78p.

Our Asda didn't have the cauldren ones on offer for 75p as posted above.

I've a recipe for Glamorgan sausages that tastes just like sausages made from meat - I can post it here if you want. They aren't meat-substitute based, but they are yummy!

    Yes please!

    Glamorgan Sausages

    5 ounces fresh white breadcrumbs
    1 small onion, finely chopped
3 ounces grated cheese (a smoky or sharp cheese)
    salt
    pepper
    1 pinch dry mustard
    1 whole egg
    1 egg yolk
    flour (to coat)

    1. Mix breadcrumbs and cheese, finely chopped onion and seasoning.
    2. Beat together 1 egg and 1 egg yolk and use to bind mixture.
    3. Make into 12 even sized sausage shapes and roll in flour.
    4. Coat in beaten egg white and flour.
    5. Fry in hot fat or oil.
    6. Serve with red peppers and a fresh green salad.
Makes 12, serves 6 (or fewer, if you like them as much as my lot!)

Oh yes I forgot about that, even though we have a pack in the cupboard!
Fairly certain it was around the 80p mark.

I also bought the chicken flavour roast mix... reeeeeeeeally wouldn't recommend that! _pale_ (and if you do try it, use a bit less water).

Even Morrisons veggie sausages have shot up to £1.39 for 6 - Not that long ago they were £1.09 and 99p before that.

I really like them though some may find them a bit too like meat for their taste. I really am not keen on Quorn sausages either - they are also generally v. expensive unless on offer.

I wonder about using the tvp but that has a special taste and texture all of its own too,.

I looked at the chicken mix and thought it might be a bit dodgy, don't know why??!! I think I'll stick to experimenting with the sausage mix as that wasn't too bad. Maybe adding stuffing mix as someone mentioned above or apple sauce, I've got a jar of that lurking in the cupboard.

I'm going to try a variation of rockie4's lentil sausages tomorrow - they sound scrummy - think I'll try to do a sage and onion version. Thanks rockie4!
