It is an offence to not display a tax disc. Most plod would fine you FPN then report to DVLA and let them sort out if you need a bigger fine for having no tax in the first place.

I must say that the online tax renewal has made things easier for me.

AFAIK you need an MOT to cover the period the tax disc is for. So get the MOT done ASAP. You'll still have the MOT valid from the 13th May.

I am assuming the car was new 13th May 2006.

This is wrong. withabix is correct. A vehicle has to have a valid MOT (if required) for the first day of the period covered by the tax disc.

Of course it is wrong! If I get tax disk from May 1 and my MOT is due in September, I do not need to do one before May! The fact that MOT is due in two weeks after tax disk, makes no difference.

You can only renew 14 days before it's due anyway. Most plod wouldn't even notice an out-of-date tax disc now, they all rely on ANPR systems and if you've paid at DVLA then you won't show up on the ANPR.

As per my post, the people stating that the MOT certificate is required are WRONG.

The only requirement for an MOT certificate when you buy a Tax Disc is for it to be valid on the first day of the month that it is due (or the day on which you buy it, whichever is the LATER).

eg, if you had an MOT certificate expiring on 2nd May and bought tax disc on 1st May, you would not need a new MOT to buy your tax disc.

That is correct, in theory. But in practice it can be a different matter. As you can have the MOT done 4 weeks in advance, I think it is better to be safe than sorry. Recommend renew insurance in advance too (obviously only if it runs out around the same time ) - as that too can hold up your tax application/or cause online problems.

Think anewman was talking about the first 13 days of May....... what has September got to do with anything??
