When is 1st MOT due?

I know that it is when a car is three years old, but I'm not sure if I have a problem.

Car was new on 13th May but the tax disc runs out today, haven't had a reminder through the post (renewed on line last year), so I pulled out last year's paperwork. It says I need insurance and current MOT.

Insurance no problem, it runs out on 13th May which is when I was aiming to get MOT sorted out for.

So, question is.......... do I need an MOT to get the tax disc on line or at PO tomorrow?

Many thanks..

No, because the car deosn't require an MOT yet (unless the V5 says it was registered before 1st May 2006).

AFAIK you need an MOT to cover the period the tax disc is for. So get the MOT done ASAP. You'll still have the MOT valid from the 13th May.

I am assuming the car was new 13th May 2006.

    Sorry, one more question.

If I pay for disc on line, how does the, 'It's in the post, officer" line, go down these days?

They give 5 days leeway I believe.

If you buy on line you get 5 days now as long as you have actually paid for it.However in my experience it can take longer than 5 days to recive it so as it runs out tonight I would go to the PO in the morning. You won't need an MOT cert there is no requirment to have an MOT covering the period of the tax. You can get the MOT done anytime before the 13th.

I think the OP will find that when they try to renew the tax, whether it be online or post office - MOT certificate will be required - as it is only a fortnight away.

The MOT will be dated from 13th May, as long as it is done before then - possibly a good idea to take V5 along when it is MOT'd, just in case.

Ooops, I been and done it now...............

DVLA site let me follow through all of the screens, including the one re insurance and current MOT, by just clicking 'NEXT'. The only info it needed was the vehicle reg and the V5 reference no. Oh and the Debit card no.

I've printed out the acceptance page, so I'll just have to use my feminine charms if necessary. The "I'm old enough to be your Grandmother, young man" sort, that is!!

    Thanks again everyone.

As per my post, the people stating that the MOT certificate is required are WRONG.

The only requirement for an MOT certificate when you buy a Tax Disc is for it to be valid on the first day of the month that it is due (or the day on which you buy it, whichever is the LATER).

eg, if you had an MOT certificate expiring on 2nd May and bought tax disc on 1st May, you would not need a new MOT to buy your tax disc.
