Possible MOT Problem-how to find out if it exists?

Is it possible to find out if a car holds a current MOT without going down the obvious and perhaps problematic route of simply asking the DVLA?

Family member has serious health issues which arose around the time the MOT on this car would have been due. This person can't remember if the car was MOT'd and they've mislaid the certificate (entirely possible) or if the MOT was never done (also entirely possible as they own more than one car and could easily have thought they attended to it when in fact they attended to a different MOT on a different car iyswim).

The road tax is now due and obviously the MOT certificate is needed but I've turned their house upside down and haven't found it. I'm now wondering if I'm looking for something that doesn't exist. Asking the DVLA will only bring this to their attention and the person may well get fined or worse? The MOT would have been due 6 months ago.

Any suggestions?

firstly the mot has nothing to do with DVLA other than for information so no fine,
secondly,if you know where the mot was done ask them to look on their computer

if the car is still insured you could try re-newing the tax online if they decline then you know

Yes, I have the other car documents here in a big wallet. Found the registration document so took the info from there and got this....

We are unable to process your request because of one of the following reasons:
    • The Document Reference Number from the V5C Registration Certificate issued by the DVLA does not exist or does not match the vehicle registration mark supplied,
      or
    • the test referred to by the test number does not exist or does not match the vehicle registration mark supplied.
Please check your documents to ensure they relate to the correct vehicle and ensure that you enter the numbers as displayed on the documents.

I've definitely typed in the right registration and V5C number so it's not looking like there is an MOT in force.

What now? The road tax is due tomorrow. If I can get their car booked in somewhere for an MOT on Monday or Tuesday, will the lapse between this one and the last one noticed and something will come of it?

Tried again with the test number from an old MOT cert from their file. Got this...

This information is correct at 30/04/2009.All passes for this Vehicle have expired. There are no later tests for this Vehicle.

Will have to phone round some garages first thing tomorrow to get it booked in somewhere.

Any idea if anything will come of this lapse?

Thanks very much for the help, all.

As long as the car hasnt been found parked on a public road there should be no problem. As long as the car isnt on the public road there has been no offence commited. If the car fails MOT and you cant tax it then you will need to SORN it - if you dont that will be problematic.

The car is on a public road. And it's being driven by other family who drive this person to appointments etc. No-one knew there was any problem up until now, so we've all been happily driving this person around none the wiser. Although to be fair, they had no idea there was a problem either.

We wouldn't be able to put it off the road as a) we've nowhere to put it and b) it's needed.

ask your local pub if you can park it there for a few days,or office etc,so long as it is private land,

hire a car till it is sorted, the car hire can work out a hell of a lot cheaper than the fines and poss crushing
