Barclaycard just cancelled card for no reason

In fighting mood now
anyone know what address to use for service on Barclays?
Hi Ians1,
I think you should let this one go. Attempting to take this further, you mentioned FSA a few posts back, will get you nowhere. Emailing or writing them will probably get you a standard template response if you're lucky.
I sympathise with you for what its worth. Barclaycard took over one of the credit cards I had (LPF) and I eventually got a letter reducing my credit limit from around £4K I think to £260  What hacked me off was the letter strongly implying that they'd done this due to my managing the account in an adverse way.
If the letter was better written and had said that the limit reduction was due to dormancy for an extended period then I would not have had a problem. As it was I went through a brief period of anger and resentment (only natural) then I moved on.
You'll see from reading the board that closing dormant or non-productive accounts or lowering the limit drastically to encourage cancellation is now increasingly common practice by CC companies. Egg did a similar exercise a while back. I'm sure a load of other people got the same letter - not just you.
I think DaveBoy's response was a tad blunt. But he is right in that you should move on. Turning this into a crusade against Barclays will get you nowhere except bitter and twisted.0 -
I've not yet had anyone close an account on me yet but I won't be too surprised if it does happen as I've a number of accounts that I haven't used for a while. I have had a few instances of credit limit reductions though - some quite drastic. I appreciate that the card companies are allowed to do this under the T and Cs. However, it was more by luck than judgement that I didn't get stranded in Spain last year because of it as they do this stuff without giving any warning. I do understand why this happens but surely there must be a better way?
Although I've been dipping into overdraft a fair bit of the time, I haven't actually used a card to pay for anything for a fair while now (apart from a couple of tiny regular payments that go out on one of them). Reasonable life of balance deals for existing customers were around at the right time for me so I used them.
My only business with Barclays is an ex Goldfish card with a £500 limit. It used to be about 7 grand limit but Goldfish slashed that before selling out to Barclaycard. It was fortunate that I had another card with me in Spain when this happened as it could have caused me problems.0 -
Have you actually gone through their complaints system? The ombudsman's unlikely to take any interest until you've done so.0

How can they make an 100 accurate prediction that he will not be able too pay later on. t.....
They can't, no-one can.
But they don't have to be 100% accurate - they can just fear he might not be able to - which is sufficient reason.
Maybe they are overcorrecting for their past mistakes?0 -

I suspect the Barclay have lent too much money, have too many credit card accounts, computer just picks out a few random then generates some random letter than covers all the bases without mentioning anything too specific than can be challanged and then proven that this was a totally random decision. I would appeal the decision and ask them to provide details of how they arrived at such a decision.
Truthfull explanations is all the OP wants I suspect, and probably deserves.0 -
[QUOTE=ians1;21149305_As_we_have_just_come_back_from_hols_this_could have been really inconvenient had we been counting on using this card for some essential item, like petrol for instance and they had just cancelled the card without warning when we were away and could not have seen the letter.[/QUOTE]
But it was not was it?..0 -
Have you rang them and spoken to anyone about this at Barclaycard ?0

A score of 960 is in the top 15% of the population. With Experian he is in the top band of people most likely to obtain credit.0

My last score was 999! Shows what a crap system it is...0 -

The fact that the CC companies make profits would indicate that the costs concerned are relatively small, and are outweighed by the revenue generated by said interest, fees (and probably charges, which is a subject for another board...
)
Given I work for the largest CC provider in the country, MBNA, and given my current job role, I can only answer YES.No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.
