What is tax code 647L?

Do you think I should be on this? I'm really not sure!
Assuming this is not a 2nd job then you should not be on a BR code but you should have 647L as a tax code.
Did you hand in a P45 when you started your new job? If not and this is your only income you need to fill in a P46 and give it to your work. They should have asked you for either a P45 or to fill in a P46 in the first place.0 -
Thanks, no they never asked for one from me and I never got a P45 from my last job I only have a P60, I'll get a P46 tomorrow and hand it in when I next go in. It's my only job! I have no printer so I'll have to go get one from the post office, I had a look on a hmrc site which was a link from the P46 form and the following that I found on there apply to me.
Employee’s P45 has a date of leaving between 6 April 2009 to 5 April 2010
Employee starts working for you on or after 25 May 2010 Use emergency code 647L on a week 1/month 1 basis and enter it in Box L of the P11.
So I guess that's the code I should be on?0 -

Well it would be if you have a P45 to hand in which you have said you don't have.
If this is your first job since 6th April this year you should tick Box A unless you have been receiving JSA? That will give you a 647L tax code which is cumulative ( ie. no Wk1/Mth 1 suffix) so you will get the benfit of your tax allowances from April.0 -
Hi all, I have been working in my current job for just over 4 years now and am not sure if my tax code is correct, it seems that most people have the tax code 647L including my co-workers, where as my codes have been 2006-2007= 139L, 2007-2008=139L, 2008-2009=151L, and finally 2009-2010=231L, i am baffled as to why this is! and if i would be entitled to some kind of rebate? could you help me with some much needed advice, thanks.0

Your codes all imply some other source of income, or taxable benefit in kind - such as a company car, for example. Your notice of coding should spell out how your coding has been arrived at, for example for 2009-10:
Personal Allowance 6,475
Car benefit 4,160
Coding 2,315
(knock off the 5 and add L to get the tax code, just to make sure no normal person can understand them.)Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -
The only other source of income i receive is working tax credit, which over the year only amounts to £1100, where as on my notice of coding it states that they have estimated this to be £4164 for the year which is obviously way off the mark. What would you suggest i do next as i have never dealt with anything like this before.0

Check your Coding Notice again.
The £4164 can't reasonably apply to WTC as it comfortably exceeds the maximum (and WTC is not normally taxable)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
