You could do, if it's cheap. But if you wanted to look at it, you should be able to trim quite a bit off that startup figure - there will be more stuff than you can see icons for - run msconfig. It's all taking up processor time as well as ram. Probably got googleupdater in there for example, courtesy of chrome.

As a comparison, rebooted mine, firefox open, PF usage = 277MB (64 of which is firefox)

There is quite a bit of google stuff, updater, toolbar, as well as itunes helper, a lot of Toshiba stuff. I think I've gone through every item before because I've already got 2 unchecked. And the RAM is only £15 for an extra 2GB. Can I just plug it in myself?

    Try this

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php

Yes, just be careful with static electricity, and make sure it is turned off at the mains and any residual current is dishcharged by switching on, whilst turned off at the plug, and make sure it is seated properly before plugging in. Use the crucial scanner to make sure you have the correct type.
  • One other thing, it says I have DDR2 PC2-5200, but it recommends 5300. Are they compatible?

I disagree 1gb on Vista on your laptop isn't enough. 2gb in total will make a nice difference.

If you unscrew the memory compartment on back of laptop and make sure you only have a single 1gb stick in there now (leaving you with x1 free slot)

    purchase either

    or

kingston brand is usually more compatible. Will take you up to 2gb in total and for that price its rude no to really :T

The above will work  (5300, 5200 they are both 667 mhz)

you simply remove two screws on back of laptop, and clip in new memory.

But as I said check first that you do have a free slot!!

Regardless of what others have suggested 2gb memory at todays prices is a no brainer nowadays. :p

Have you tried a different browser? eg Firefox? 15 tabs is a little excessive.

It is?! Depends on your browsing habits! With my research I can regularly have 25 to 50 tabs open, no problem in FF under XP Pro or OS X, Vista eat your heart out ;)

I don't actually have a free slot, so I'll have to remove one of the 512MB. Should I have matching pairs of RAM, or doesn't it matter? Some sites says it doesn't matter and others say it does to preserve dual channel.

Process Explorer will show you which processes are running on your PC together with the resources being used.
Used to be Sysinternals untion Microsoft swallowed them but Microsoft still host all the utilities on there site.
1 Gb is OK for XP but not Vista as previous posters have said.
Firefox has a peak memory size of 112 Mb on my laptop.
Look at what else you are running.
