Creating BT email sub accounts - "Invalid requests"

Hubby and I have been trying to set up a sub account for me on our BT Total Broadband email and are having no luck.
Hubby has his account - the main account - and I have one sub account in my maiden name. I want to set up another sub account in my married name.
We have no problem logging and getting to the main sub account creation page, and although it's been a game trying to get a username that isn't taken and getting an error message to choose another one, we think we finally cracked it with the last one we chose, only to be taken to a new page which simply said "Invalid Request".
There's no other information to tell us why, but every time we try it keeps happening. BT's help page is...well...no help and I can't face an call centre.
Can anyone shed any light? What are we doing wrong?

Is there any particular reason why you have to have a sub account?
Is this another email address?
Why not just geta Googlemail address?

It works regardless of who supplies your broadband, and if you leave BT you just take your address with you, no need to do all that informing of address changes.Move along, nothing to see.0
