Your newsletter advice on Broadband

Your newsletter this week says a lot about broadband deals, some of which end this week. What I think is missing from your web page it the fee you get charged if you leave for any reason.

For example with TalkTalk the contract is 18 months and there is a fee for terminating early. This led to BT imposing a fee to existing customers (or customers of BT Wholesale providers like Plusnet) if they terminate a service.

Plusnet have imposed this fee on their customers giving them 1 month to leave to else accept it. I plan to dispute it when the time comes as it was not part of the agreement when I joined.

It is not a small amount, somewhere between £50 and £70, so when people look at jumping they need to consider how much they are saving vs the sting in the tail fee.

Of course it is daft that the toothless Ofcom allowed BT to apply this fee mid contract but that is another discussion.

"Ends Thur. Superfast 20 Mbps broadband for £5.17/mth after cashback or £1.50/mth for O2 customers
A number of red-hot broadband deals end this week (though exact package & speed can depend on where you live, so check first). Cheapest broadband: Plusnet* at £5.99's the cheapest standard deal, it has a big 10Gb download limit. Yet while Plusnet's fast at up to 8Mbps, until midnight Thur 30 April the O2 premium package* at up to 20Mbps gives the first 3 mths free, so over the year's contract it's an avg. £11/mth (£7.30 for existing mobile customers). Cut costs further: Sign up for O2 through a Cashback Site and you can get up to £70 cashback, which factored in, cuts the cost to £5.17/mth or £1.50/mth for O2 customers, though remember this cashback's not completely guaranteed. Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !

The section that you quote also leads to the BB Guide where it tells you about the possible charges for leaving before your contract is up...

If you switch to another ISP, as I did this year, I signed up for a year's contract and the details for terminating are given before I clicked the yes button, this is the same with any contract and people should always read the small print before agreeing to a new contract.
