Wiring loom, ecu, immobiliser, and injection can be different.
It's easier to swop like for like.

easy and cheap to swap
not much goes wrong with them, whats up with it?
If it is terminal just drive it till it blows up, nothing to loose!0 -
I would guess head gasket and cracked/fractured piston liner.
Pretty common on 106.0 -
Up to you but I don't see it as economical to repair, there could be 100's of £'s more bills just around the corner on a car that age. Cheaper to sell it for scrap and get something younger that works. 11 years is pretty good going.
If it were an insurance claim it would be an economical write off for certain.0 -

I'm as sure as I can be that the garage is genuine, I know a few people who've been there and had problems picked up and sorted for a lot less than at other places.
My bfs dad is quite capable of picking up and fitting a new engine, and is happy to do so. Just weighing up the options tho. As you say, have to consider when it's time to give up
The problem is its a gamble at the end of the day, You are lucky you have someone capable of fitting an engine and might not have to pay him too much :rotfl:
The problems to weigh up is say you bought the engine blue haddock pointed to its what £160 or so with a 30 day guarentee add to that a few bits and bobs maybe hoses, mountings needed etc when you get into changing it makes it £200.
You then fire it up and everything is ok so you change the oil and filters and cam belt as BH also correctly suggests makes it £250 without any labour etc.
If however its a dud you have to take it back out, send it back get another and you never get the labour back, cars off the road all the time etc etc.
Sometimes its just not worth it, I remember a few years ago a guy with a VW Polo went through 3 before he got a decent one. I did try talking him out of it but it turned out his Son (who had died) bought it for him for his 60th Birthday and he couldn't bear to part with the car :cool:It's not just about the money0 -

The garage said something about the pistons... Unfortunately it was in for the mot so I can't drive itIt failed because of emissions then they discovered it's only running on 2 cylinders or something. Really annoying thing is I had no idea anything was wrong, have never had any problems at all with him
