My 106 apparently needs a new engine. Any idea of rough cost for a second one and fitting? Is a 1.1L standard engine

Thanks :)

    Hi Peach,
Sorry to say that the costs vary but I would expect to pay around the £500 to £600 mark to have a 2nd h enigine put in with any sort of guarantee usualy 3 months which is probably about the value of an s reg these days. The other problem is that a bit of luck is needed to find a decent engine.
Might be time to think about cutting losses :o

an engine should be about £100 from a breaker,if you know a mechanic he would probably charge £150ish to change

nobody has yet been blunt enough to say that a car of that quality and age just ain't worth the money or effort involved in changing the engine. what's apparently wrong with the engine?

A 1999 Pug 106 fetches as little as £250 in autotrader..

get a (free) second opinion just to be sure it's not a dodgy garage trying to fleece you (do they do anything else?!)

    Thanks guys :)

I'm as sure as I can be that the garage is genuine, I know a few people who've been there and had problems picked up and sorted for a lot less than at other places.

My bfs dad is quite capable of picking up and fitting a new engine, and is happy to do so. Just weighing up the options tho. As you say, have to consider when it's time to give up :(

I would say that you should scrap it. But it's really up to you.

A 1.1 peugeot TU engine will NOT cost anywhere near £500 - realistically your looking between £75 and £200. The engine is used in all sorts of models including Saxo, 106 and 206. There are several suitable engines for sale on Ebay.

The only other thing i would do when replacing the engine is to put a new timing belt on it and give it a good service.
