Browsers won't connect to the internet

Hey all, hope you're good.
I ran into a bit of a problem with my laptop last night that I don't know how to rectify. I'm running XP on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I installed a new programme (imTOO wma to mp3 converter) and ever since my internet browsers (firefox and google chrome) refuse to connect to the internet. the same can be said for msn messenger and thunderbird. However, skype still connects and works nornally. I know it's not the router or the internet connection itself as my phone (which has wifi) works perfectly, as does my xbox360's wired connection to the router.
There were no error messages and i rebooted the laptop several times, uninstalled the imTOO software, tried a "system restore" (which doesn't initiate for some reason) as well as going to run>msconfig and played around with various startup and service settings, but to no avail.
I don't have a software firewall as I'm behind a router and even with windows firewall disbaled those programmes still refuse to connect to the internet. As I said, I rebooted several times but nothing seems to work. I have also tried to "repair" the various internet connections but nothing. The strange thing is that the laptop tells me im connected to my router, either wired or wirelessly, and everything seems normal.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what I should do? I am thinking of reinstalling firefox/chrome, but seeing as msn/thunderbird don't connect to the net either i don't see why this would be the problem.
Thanks for any help!
Kam

Any joy with a ping? (Start > Run > cmd > ping google.com)0

"I installed a new programme (imTOO wma to mp3 converter) and ever since my internet browsers (firefox and google chrome) refuse to connect to the internet"
My initial thoughts are the programs dodgy or you didnt in fact download the program you were supposed to:idea:0 -
Yeah I agree (the programme itself worked fine though, strangely). Any ideas therefore on how I can fix the problem? I uninstalled the programme which made no difference, and also i ran Registry Mechanic which did its usual fixup job but again, this has made no difference.
Thanks! :T0 -
Try a system restore from safe mode.0

Thanks for all your responses, I tried the ping and the result was:
"Ping request could not find host google.com"
When I do run>cmd>ipconfig:
Connection specific DNS suffix = domain_not_set.invalid
IP address
Subnet Mask
Default gateway
Local area connection: Media disconnected
Afraid that's out of my knowledge zone, any ideas?
And I'd love to do a system restore, but for some weird reason there are NO system restore points, I don't know why that is!
Thanks! :T0 -
Sounds like a browser hijack . However if this doesnt help update the thread and we shall dig deeper. Please support my thanks button if I have been of any help

Youll need to use another computer and get some programs downloaded
Could really do with a FULL malwarebytes scan
Certainly a HIJACK log would be good too:idea:0 -

Was this done using the "Wireless connection"? If so try disabling the wireless connection then repeating ping and ipconfig while connected with an ethernet cable.0
