New sim free Iphone for less than a contract one with o2

I have just posted a thread about being able to haggle on the iphone from o2 but I think I have found a way to get one sim free for less.

I’m currently with orange but my contract is up. When I told them I wanted an iphone so I was going to leave they offered me any phone they do for the same contract as o2 for £15 a month. This got me thinking

If I buy the 3g iphone from o2 I can get it with changing contract after 9 months for £762.53 on 18 month contract. Remember the phone will still be locked on o2 after 18 months

Or

I could get the new HTC Touch HD or Blackberry Bold on orange for £15 a month. This would come to £270 for 18 month contract with the same minutes etc as o2. I would then sell the phone on ebay which would sell for around £300 but lets say it goes for £250.

I could then buy the iphone sim free from Play.com for £600 which would mean I get a sim free iphone for just over £600.

Not sure if I have missed anything but looks like it would work to me?

I don't quite follow your logic... plus thats not big enough of a saving for an MSE'er :)

    I personally would have taken the Orange contract £15 x 18mth = £270
Sell the HTC Touch HD for £300ish.
Buy 8GB iPhone on PAYG for £350
Buy a turbo-sim/or unlock code for less than £10...

So the final total of package over 18mths =

    £270 (line rental)
    + £350 (8GB iPhone)
    + £10 (unlock)
    - £300 (Sell HTC Touch HD)
    = £330

Effectively you've just bought yourself an unlocked 8GB iPhone for £60. ;)

    Good luck with your decision.

With the way im doing it you would get an new Iphone 16gb for £300 unlocked. How is that not a big enough of a saving? They cost £600 so you save £300 if your looking at it your way!

You would still need to pay you £270 contract but works out alot cheaper over 18 months than one with a contract with o2.

Ok, lets revise my calculations for a new 16GB iPhone.

    Over 18mths
    £270 (line rental)
    + £392 (16GB iPhone PAYG)
    + £10 (unlock)
    - £300 (Sell HTC Touch HD)
    = £372

    £372 - £270 = £102 for 16GB iPhone.

I couldn't quite follow your way of calculating... so I'm assuming you're doing the following.

    Over 18mths
    £270 (line rental)
    + £600 (16GB iPhone sim free)
    - £300 (Sell HTC Touch HD)
    = £570

In both cases I would agree that they both beat the 02 contract deal. But personally speaking, my method saves you an extra £200 which can be put towards paying off the line rental or getting a 16GB IPod Touch or Nokia 5800 or just saving it.

I'm only giving you my advice on what I would do in your situation. I'm not after an iPhone so it doesn't bother me either way. Just trying to save you a bit of extra cash, but if you are prepared to pay the extra £200 then who am I to argue.

An alternative option is to get the HTC Touch HD on Orange and just buy a 16GB IPod Touch for £153 from LittlewoodsDirect. They are doing 30% discount on first orders. Thereby getting the best of both worlds, but thats just me.

    Happy shopping.
