Here is an excellent site regarding photography and rights. I understand that their pdf of photographers rights is currently being updated.

In essence, you do not have a right to privacy.

Agreed. Unless it is in respect of a commissioned photograph. See above.

I am sorry but you are still wrong.
I can take a photo on a public street of ANYONE without permission.
Now if I followed you for 2 miles snapping away or used my telephoto lens to snap you in you garden, you could get me done for harrassment, but if I set my tripod up on Oxford Street - providing I am not causing an obstruction - then I can snap away until I get bored.

You paid the photographer to take the pictures hence he was working for you at the time. So surely you have some say as to what he can do with the pictures. Even though he retains the copyright, that does not mean he can do whatever he likes?!

when i got married in March there was some jargon in the contract saying that copyright remains with the photographer.
I personally would inform the photographer that any old tom !!!!!! or harry can right click and copy the photos which is bad for his business and that way he will probably disable the right click
My photographer asked which photos i wanted him to put on his website so i chose them and the rest he hasnt put on there.

You have some say - the right to privacy in commissioned photographs. they cannot be exhibited unless the right is waived.

    Ask Dom Joly

    Ask Dom Joly what?
We have already established that I do not have to ask Dom Joly (or anyone else) if I want to take a photograph of a person walking down the street.
Do you think that people who are photographed scowling at court photographers just before facing the judge gave permission for their picture to appear in The Sun?
Do you think the little girl (in what is possibly the most famous photograph of all time) who had he clothes burned off by napalm during the Vietnam War gave permission for her photo to be used?
