Quick question(s)

Would like a few thoughts, comments etc if peeps have a sec. :A

Is this a good deal:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329743-3848802-3848802-3837658-3879665.html

(Basically it's a Turion Dual-Core x2, 2.10GHz, 3GB (but 4GB max), 250GB, with DVD writer, 5 in1 reader and webcam - in case you don't/can't follow link)

It's for my mum (flossy_splodge on here), whose pc has crashed and died a terrible death. She'll rebuild the pc, but needs something in the meantime, and reckons it's time to get mobile!

AFAIK the spec is reasonably good (?), and the price is good given that if she buys it by end of month, there's a 10% off code plus 8% back through quidco. Makes it about £370.

Just wondered if anyone had thoughts?

Also, she wanted me to ask (her being without computer access) - can she transfer Outlook 2000 from her old machine (running W2K....:rotfl:) onto a new lappy, esp if it comes with Vista?

She wants a decent, hard-working machine. She won't be watching thousands of dvds on it, nor will she be online gaming (at least not that she admits to:rotfl:), just lots of surfing, emails, word processing etc.

Cheers!
xx

  • If you can get it for £370 then go for it - £449 is an average deal.

As for transferring outlook, well that depends on many things
-Has her HD failed (yes but very expensive)
-Is her HD okay (possilbe but still going to cost you unless you already have the apropriate equipement - I guess you dont because your asking on here)
-Can she boot into Windows at all? (if she can then its easy)
-Does she need it or want it?- this going to require more work for you, ontop of tutoring her on Vista.

    Just my 2 sheckles worth

Also, you will have more response in future if you label your new threads with something more descriptive

Thanks for input - I won't need to tutor her (usually it's the other way round!)
She thinks it;s the power unit that has gone, not the HD. She is used to Outlook and likes it. I'm aware she could buy a more up to date version, but she's happy with 2007.
She can't boot up the pc at all as far as I'm aware.
    Cheers.

No I can't currently boot up at all as power unit has failed and I haven't replaced it yet.
However I DO intend to fix Desktop PC so WILL be able to access anything.
The query is, I have all the discs for Office 2000 Professional including Outlook. I donot want to pay out for a different version to go on the laptop I shall be getting if I can install Outlook 2000 using Vista; so my question is....does anyone know if it is compatible?
True money saving question you see!:rotfl:
Thanks for all help. I have currently borrowed a 'puta but only for an hour or so so forgive me if I don't respond but jojo will monitor for me and feed back any responses until I get online again.
    xx
Should add that I intend to run an up to date version of Office but the version with Outlook is SOoooooo expensive! hence my wish to extract just Outlook and import it if possible.

"there's a 10% off code plus 8% back through quidco."

I might buy that myself. How do I go about getting the code and quidco cashback? (I have joined quidco but its all new to me :p)

    Re: Outlook 2000 under Vista:

You'll probably have problems, as many people report that it's not compatible:

    http://outlook-tips.net/howto/vista.htm

There are also a few people reporting ways of fixing the problems, so it might be possible to make it work - but no guarantee that some future Windows update won't break it again.

If you don't need the corporate features of Outlook (i.e. you only want it for internet-based mail, not Exchange server) then Mozilla Thunderbird (plus Lightning calendar plugin) is actually quite good, with similar features to Outlook 2000.

First clear your cookies and Temp Internet Files (just in case you've browsed HP's site). I tend to run CCleaner - so far never had a non-tracked enquiry.

Then log into quidco, search for HP (under Computers and Software category), and find their listing.
In the listing is a) the code for 10% off (valid until tomorrow), I checked it by going through the whole process, putting the lappy in basket and then entering code - worked fine, although of course I didn't pay....!!!)
and b) the link to "Visit the Merchant and earn cashback. Hit this, ignore the stupid warning that comes up, and hit the same button again (you'll see what I mean), and once you're on HP's website, don't navigate away before you buy, or if you do - go through quidco to find it.

Basically (my non-technical understanding...) they need to see that quidco "introduced" you to their website - you've never been there before :rotfl:- for you to get cashback.

Within 24 hours or so of completed transaction, you should have the amount as "Tracked" in your account n Quidco, from there it'll progress to "Validated" (HP agree to pay), then "Received" (by Quidco) then "Paid" - to you. If it's more than £50 you have due to be paid in one go, be aware you need to have given them bank details for a BACS transfer; otherwise they pay through Paypal.

Does that make sense? If not, let me know and I'll see if I can explain it better!
I'm guessing your comment is a recommendation...

If you find it is not comaptable then check out "software4students.co.uk" Microsoft approved reseller at supprisingly good discounts if you have a student in your family (school or Uni or mature student etc) Office 2007 standard on disc (includes word, excel, outlook etc) £35 ish Office 2007 Pro Plus (got everything, including things I have no idea what they are!!) £44ish.

Hope this does not break posting rules!! I have no connections to this re-seller, just bought Pro Plus from there and so very happy!!:j
