Dental implants!

They've summed it up pretty well really.
If you live in or near a city with a dental teaching hospital, the circumstances of the injury might mean he'd be accepted for treatment with implants there, but it would be a slog to get referred, and to the top of the waiting list, and the treatment.
Definiatly need the denture for now.How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
We are in Stoke on Trent... up for a slog to save 6K... any suggestions on where to start please.
Thanks for your time.
Nikki
Edit to say: After a google one in sheffield come up and they have told me they can not help as he is registered with a dentist and his dentist would have to refer him.
Anyone know how this works?0 -
My friend fell on top of me when we were younger and knocked my front tooth out completely including the root. I got a bridge but it kept falling out so I got a dental plate (sure thats the same as a denture) and it did me fine until.......I swallowed it! I cant afford an implant until after im back from Africa so im having another made up. £100 a time but being honest a dental plate isnt bad and will look a thousand times better than a huge gap at the front. Implants are £3k+ up here.
Have you asked your son what HE wants and not you??? (not meaning to sound harsh but its his teeth, maybe he would like a dental plate until he gets a permanant fixture)

I get the info and give him the options which HE has asked of me and I am more than happy as his mother to help with.. What an odd thing to think.
No one has mentioned a detal plate and I will now look into what that is but at 17 he will chose implants because hes got a brain and a mother who will cough up for them if she needs to.
Thanks for your imput.

Edit to say from google a dental plate is another word for dentures???0 -
DO shop around! I was in contact with adentist for some private dental work (long story - have to have sedation) and after shelling out about £400 and still not seeing any real progress (EVERYTHING is charged for under the private route) I went back to the drawing board and shopped around with much help from my 2 DD's who knew what I needed.
Found a much nearer guy who has done a marvelloous job on my 2 front teeth and various other work at about half the amount I was quoted elsewhere.:T
I don't believe a better job was possible and more to the point for me, he and his staff were just wonderful (to say I'm a nervous patient would be the understatement of the century).
I didn't believe there could be such a variation in price. What's more I paid over 12 months at NO additional cost via a scheme the dentist had in place to help those like me with no money.
So keep enquiring until you're sure you have ALL the best info and Good Luck.x0 -
Girlpower - how horrible for you and your poor son. I hope he's feeling better - those thugs should be made to pay.
Good for you for being willing to shell out for implants - I second the idea above - find a Dental Hospital and see what they can do for you. I went to one and got a tooth extraction done, under sedation - for free (I'm a student). That can cost £200 upwards on private.
I'd explore all options - is there anything the NHS can do? Can your GP help? If he's at college, is there a student option (there often is). Can the dentist refer your son to somewhere - or refer you for cheaper treatment?
I have to say (and I never thought I would say this) - I'd consider going down the compensation route for this one. It's totally unfair and unacceptable for you or your son to have to shell out 6K because of someone else's mindless violence. Nor should he have to feel self-conscious or suffer unnecessarily.
Best of luck, hope all goes well. xxxxxx
If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you0 -

Thank you for your kind words. I have had a thought of looking into my house insurance as well so that may be something else to explore... never know.
I will also look into the comp route but as no suspect I don't know how we stand.
Some hope from Leeds Dental hospital who have said that I could ask my dentist to refer him to them but they normally only do implants for mouth cancer patients so they are making no promises but suggest to get a referal for an appointment with them... heres hoping.

If you are interested in the compensation option, contact your local branch of Victim Support who will be able to assist you in submitting a CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority) claim.
They can advise how much (if any) you may receive, will actually sit with you to fill in the form (if you want them to) and will chase up the claim.
Makes life a bit better to be supported and the scheme was set up for exactly these sort of circumstances. be quick tho. Government is closing down anything that pays out to try and recoup money to balance the books!! :eek:0 -
That is really awfull ,i feel for you and your son i am really sensitive about teeth so i know how bad this is for you.
Hope some of the advice on here has been useful ,but the criminal injuries thing i don't know much about it but he must be due compensation.
Someone i know had a glass smashed in her eye and she got compensation, she lost hers sight in one eye .
Best of luck!0
