Dental implants!

I know they are really expensive, but i have always wanted them as my teeth are not great.

Probably will never have it done, but does anyone know anything about them i really just want to know all about it so i can weigh up the advantages and disadvantages!

Great to hear from anyone!

I can't say I know much, but my dentist told me they cost north of a grand each! Also it's a pretty long process, as you have to let the socket part settle into the gum for ages before they put the tooth in. Put me right off, I can tell you! And not just cos of the price.
Good luck, if you're feeling brave! xx

    Implants aren't a replacement for teeth - they're a replacement for gaps.

If you still have your own teeth, it will be much better value to get those fixed up.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Get your dentist to refer you to a good cosmetic dentist. If a good result could be achieved fairly simply, then even your own dentist might make a decent job of it.

If your dentist is a 100mph NHS one though, I'd get the referral whatever.

Absolutely - they can do awesome things with crowns these days! I have a gap, otherwise I wouldn't even consider.
Were you thinking of veneers, perhaps? Slightly different thing, I think - celebs have those.

My front teeth have an implant, a crown, and two veneers.

The implant (a titanium socket screwed into your jawbone which then has a post screwed into it, onto which a crown is put) took a long time cost me a lot of pain and discomfort and wasn't cheap.

The crown is much like a normal tooth that doesn't hurt when you eat ice cream, but you do get feeling through it the root of the tooth is still original and so flexes on your gum. There are two types of crown: one where your tooth is filed to a point and a ceramic cap is put onto it, and one where your tooth is cut off and has a metal post drilled into the remaining root onto which the crown is put.

I'm not so struck on the veneers (the dentist removes the front edge off your tooth and stick on a tooth coloured shim in its place); they look good, but they are sensitive and I'm always wondering if they could flip off.

Anyway, I can eat an apple and chew a steak, but I wouldn't like to try one of those circus acts where you hang by your teeth..

The comparison between crown, veneer etc is an artificial one.
Neither is better than the other across the board. In some situations the crown is the better choice, in others the veneer is.
Stating veneers are sensitive isnt accurate across the board either. They shouldnt be, any more than any other restoration is. If the teeth are sensitive then there is a reason which should be investigated.

Certainly true that I would rather have a natural tooth to work with than replace a tooth with an implant. Saying that I would rather have an implant placed than cut into a sound tooth for bridgework to fill a gap.

Oh and post crowns are done when there is no other alternative IMO. Any dentist knows that sound tooth is far better at retaining a restoration of any sort than a post. Even the new glass fibre ones.

I have a maryland bridge at the moment on the second tooth from the front as it never grew :-( the bridge is looking a little worn now and because it doesnt link to the gum (as no tooth there) in pics and things it looks like it hangs down a little. I have an appt to see my cosmetic dentist next month - really excited, but i'm expecting the cost to be in the region of £2-£2 1/2 k

    Sorry for jumping in but...

Can anyone advise please. Two weeks ago my 17 year old son was walking home and a gang walked by him and punched him once in the face with a knuckleduster straight in his mouth, my son saw his teeth fly through the air and ran home away from them as he saw other weapons.Police called and CID dealing but area search proved negative and he would not know then if he saw them again So we have no hope of catching these monsters.

He went to the emergency dentist who advised they had knocked the teeth clean out along with the root and his top middle 3 teeth are gone forever. Advised to wait 2 weeks to seen his own dentist as very swollen and black gums.

I have been in today to make appointments for him and they have advised they can not bridge no more than two teeth at a time and his only option on the NHS is dentures, I can not have my boy at 17 with false teeth for the rest of his life. He had lovely teeth which he has always taken care of so I asked about screw in teeth. She advised this is private only and that they are implants taking 6 to 8 months to complete and cost 2000K per tooth.

They want me to have the dentures as tempory teeth and pay 35 pounds for a private appointment for implants advice.

We do not have the money but I will have to somehow find it. Any suggestions on getting this cost down or other options they are not telling me about?

    Thanks for your time.

    Nikki
