Wow thanks for all the replies and suggestions!
    Like the idea of Bali.

So another question-how last minute are last minute deals? And where can I get them?
Ideally I would love to go next week!!

    Thanks again

    Hi
There are other ways to trek to Macchu Picchu than the "classic" Inca Trail. These are not as oversubscribed http://www.andeantrails.co.uk/altinca1.htm
I spent three weeks travelling solo in Peru after a dramatic year in my personal life and had an amzing time (i did the classic trail but i was told by other travellers that the others were amazing too)
we have love enough to light the streets.

Have just checked Air Newzealands website for monday 4th May and you can fly all in for £735 return (London - Auckland). This would leave you loads of cash for excursions/internal flights/accommodation etc. You can do anything from trecking through the national parks to climbing glaciers, whale watching to jet boating. I would seriously reccommend it. There are also some great excursions available to learn about and experience the Maori culture.

    Hi there
I had really wanted to go through a specialist agent and book a 'tour' type holiday where its arranged for you, as this will be my first trip by myself and am a little nervous! However, am finding it impossible to find anything available that leaves in the next week or so. Can anyone recommend any sites/companies that might be able to help me so late in the day? I would ideally like to leave in the next few days, as I need to be back in the UK for 18th May due to it being my boyfriend's 30th birthday!

Have I left it too late??

    Thanks again

    Have sent you a PM!

Would suggest Explore as they do that sort of thing & we had a good time with them. Would post URL here but this site reckons I'm too new to be able to be trusted [EDIT] Wouldn't let me post it originally but will if I edit!

Lea, don't be afraid to go it alone. If you decide to go somewhere a little less exotic and safer for example Australia/NZ, then it is soooooooo easy. All you need to do is make sure your first nights accommodation is pre booked (easy peasy over the internet). Once you are there you will be surprised at how geared up places are to independant travellers. Most places will have a agency of sorts 'in house' that can book onward travel/excursions/accommodation etc, so you actually have to do very little yourself.

The problem with a pre booked tour, is that there is no flexibility. If you decide you like somewhere and want to spend another night or two, your stuffed. Similarly, if once in another country, you learn of somewhere that sounds fab and you'd love to visit, then again, you are stuffed.

When I have travelled previously, I was surprised at the amount of people (of all ages and all budgets) who were travelling independantly, they far far outweighed those who were on organised tours.

By the way, when I travelled, I was in my 30s and had never done anything other than package tours before!

Just because you are only going away for a few weeks, doesn't mean you can't go independantly
