Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it worth blogging about something that can't be linked to anything that can be sold?

Ie. an alcoholic blogging about alcoholism or a drug addict blogging about addiction- couldn't have adverts that linked to products on Amazon, if you see what I mean!

You could advertise books on the subject.

Go to Amazon and search for alcoholism.

You can still do it. forumotion -> phpBB3 then to what ever forum.

It's probably illegal though. Since they technically own your content. But alot of people do it.

I dont know anyone that would do it. I have asked some people and they say not possible. They say you would need to start a new forum from scratch and lose all your posts etc which isnt good. Even if you could convert it its not reliable that it would all come out properly.

How would you know even if you paid someone to do it and managed to find someone that it would all transfer properly.

You just need to ask yourself, what items would a recovering alcoholic need, that they could buy? As mentioned, books the subject is a good start. Others could be 'Dry' weekend retreats, alternative drinks, juices, grape spritzers etc

One thing to beware of, is Google Adsense ads and other context based ads, that display ads based on keywords of you page. These may pick up on alcohol and then display ads for alcohol and related items. Not certain about alcohol advert laws here, but it may fling up a book on brewing beer or wine tasting events! Which would obviously be counter-intuitive and a big no-no for your audience. Google Adsense do let you block certain advertisers and categories of ads mind.

Ultimately, if its a topic you know a lot about and are interested in, then blogging about it will come easy. If it's your first blog, it should definitely be on a topic close to your heart. Do check out the competition, see what they're doing, see what's sort of posts are most popular. Ultimately, don't get too hung up on monetising the blog initially, that can come later. Build up an audience and see what direction it goes in the long run.

This is a really interesting idea. I'd like to look into blogging too. But for every successfull blog, how many don't take off?

I don't think it's so much a matter of 'not taking off', as the person doing the blog losing interest and stopping.

Absolutely everything I've read on the subject seems to point to the fact that you mustn't give up, and if you keep plugging away at it you will eventually get some success (that's what I keep telling myself anyway!).

I think millions of blogs are started, but only a small minority are still going 6 months, or a year later.
