The rules say:
Users are allowed links in profile pages but please don't mention them in your posts or signature in any way.0 -
This certainly seems to be a thread that has bursts of activity, and lots of good advice for those of us just starting out on the journey, and a big reality check too.
Only using mine as something to promote my freelance writing more than simply as a way of earning money, so low expectations is what I've got so far for sure.
If there is anybody still frequenting this one, could I ask a question about the google adwords tool? Is what I'm looking for in terms of keywords searches with lots of numbers of them made, but with low competition? Or do I need to find out which ones have the highest paying ads?DFW - DEBT FREEEEEE!

As others have said some bloggers have got book deals. There are also bloggers who have got paid blogging jobs, e.g. there are a few people writing for the New Statesman website who got picked up because of their blogs.0 -

The competition column on the adwords tool refers to the competition between advertisers for those keywords. But if you are wanting to profit from adsense (having ads on your site/s) then yes you want a reasonable number of searches, with low competition (in the search engine results) from other websites but keyword terms that are fairly expensive (for advertisers) and have lots of competition - so that you will have a variety of ads on your site and earn a decent amount for each click on them.
There is a blog post here which has lots of useful info for people wanting to earn money from adsense (even if you are targeting a bigger audience/niche than what the author calls a "micro niche"): http://www.memwg.com/how-to-create-a-microniche-adsense-site/"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

There are certainly people out lhere who are able to live off blogging and that being their only source of income but it didn't happen overnight. It's not a get rich quick kinda thing. People put a lot of time and effort into blogging and after a long time get rewarded.
I've tried blogging before and liked it but didn't get an audience and got bored after a while and didnt feel like updating all the time. If you have good knowledge of a subject it is great to be able to share this information with other people, but you genuinely have to be very interested in the subject and be eager enough to update it regularly.. at least every few days.
Another great type of blogging is vlogging or video blogging and this is when people video themselves in their own lives and upload it onto youtube. Yes people watch it! It is actually quite interesting to see what other people do in their lives.. as long as there is something happening and the people in it are active and update.. usually posting videos daily. This can be come tedious and involves work editing and more than you would think. You would be surprised over time how many viewers you accumulate. I only know this as I have watched the rise of some youtubers who have done this. After a while you can become a youtube partner (you allow youtube to put ads on your vids, but you get paid for each time a video is viewed). Some people have been at this for quite a few years now and I imagine they get paid quite a lot as they have become quite well known on youtube. You are never allowed to discuss earnings though. There is a lot more to learn than you think and you need to dedicate quite a lot of time to filming. editing, and uploading your videos. If you enjoy it though, it can be fun and after a long while you may be able to give up your current job and concentrate on the videos. There are quite a few on youtube that have been fortunate enough to do this! It would take years to build yourself up to that status though unless you get good exposure to your channel from other youtubers who already have big viewing figures.0 -
It can be a great idea. If you have a specialism, consider creating a niche blog about it. Use something like AdSense to earn money, and network with other people in your sector.0

I'm really interested in starting a blog about one of my interests.
