I'd happily suggest Vidahost. I've been hosting my book selling site with them for 18 months. A few days ago I also decided to install Wordpress on the same webspace using their automatic installer. I had no idea what I was doing, but crossed my fingers and it worked a treat.

My yearly hosting bill is around £17 and the reason I'm so glad to recommend them is for their service. They've held this numpty's hand many times when I've got confused. Never seem to get irritated with me!

Have read the whole thread with interest :)

I have a domain that I was thinking of letting go anyway. I've just been looking at my hosts to see whether or not I could use Wordpress with it but it all sounds terribly complicated.

Does anyone have any advice about who to register with? I'm thinking of ease of use and the pennies of course.

Blogger is very easy to use, it is like cutting and pasting, and it is hosted for free for you. Here are the steps but it is straight forward

    1. Go to blogger and click on create a blog, you need google account, to register

    2. If you already have a Google account, you can skip the "Create Google Account" step and simply sign in with your existing Google account username and password

    3. Enter the blog name that will be your chosen name, and domain in blogger.
check availability, if it is green, that mean name is available.

    4. Chose your template,

    5. Your blog is now online and ready for you to start posting.

    6. Write anything here then hit publish, then view your blog.

Your blog will be live after these few steps, I started on blogger and I learned great deal, I now bought my domain but I still think blogger is user friendly.

Think I am going to go with 123reg for hosting... I can always upgrade if my blog is successful! (I hope,,, :( ). This thread doesn't seem very active anymore :( shame as I could do with some guidance.

They are good for domains but their hosting is quite expensive. Both Vidahost and ezpz have been recommended on here and there is a 10% off voucher for Vidahost here. Not used either of these myself but am looking at Vidahost for a new blog. They have Fantastico for installing WP:

Went with vidahost. Installed wordpress. Need to sort it out properly tomorrow!
  • Another tip about blogging, if want to work out how to make money from running one, then the best place I have found is challenge.co (formerly the 30 day challenge). Its a completely free program that teaches you everything you need to know from picking keywords to monitising your blog.
I did it a couple of years ago and it was great, they've just started this years challenge aswell.
