Wireless router

Have just bought dell core2 laptop & need to get wirless router to enable use of very old pc dell dimension 500 pentium 4 cpu 3.ooghz, ram 2.5gb & laptop together.

I live in an old stone cottage 20 inch thick walls, which has virtually no reception for mobiles or mobile broadband (not sure if this is relevant). Have bought 2 wireless routers previously 1st belkin used to work, then stop and had to be reset each time, so sent it it back. Ordered another netgear with adsl line fixed plus wireless couldnt get it to work at all so sent it back.

I think the internal walls are made of normal brick but not sure. Would only need the connection to work within the house, the router would only situated approx 5ft from the main tel connection point.

Any suggestions or advice welcome

How about not going the usual wireless route.

These solwise adaptors might be just what you're looking for, they broadcast a wireless signal through the electrical lines, they are a bit expensive, but offer hubs for any room you want to strengthen your broadband signal in.

Why not simply use Ethernet cables to connect your PC's to the router. Your ISP should supply you with a router is you ask for your MAC or threaten to leave them.

Great, thanks so much for all your quick replies.
This piece of kit does seem to be the answer to my problems, especially as they all seem to get quite good reviews on amazon.

However, will I have to buy another router?

I currently have a very simple adsl usb modem from zoom, which only has one usb socket and lead which goes straight into my old pc, a telephone/internet line socket & another telephone socket for plugging in another phone.

Sorry for sounding a bit thick but the technical stuff makes me all fingers & thumbs!

Take your pick, any of these here are suitable.

Tiscali are about the only ISP that don't provide wireless routers but they are not likely to last much longer as Tiscali. They have been up for sale for about a year and no ISP wants them at the price that they think they are worth being the most complained about ISP for years with steadily mounting debts!

yes had heard that as well, come may 17th am looking for a change. I know this is a different topic, but who would you recommend?

We have a small very rural exchange with no superfast broadband so alot of the offers aren't open to us, and also would if poss like to avoid any dealing with a Technical call centre based in India - have had endless frustration when contacting Tiscali this way, especially when broadband is down for some reason!

I also currently have a call package for anytime calls incl some of europe etc, which is currently costing me approx £26 a month (includes a discount for the line rental)

Money Saving Expert tends to list only the best offers which are usually for the fast broadband
