Hi,
My laptop has recently given up the ghost so i am in the market for a replacement.
Given that i only use the laptop for browsing the web and downloading the occasional song and zip file would an iphone -or ipod touch- be a adequate replacement?
I already have a desktop in the house.

Probably, but you might find a netbook a better half way house. Bigger screen, keyboard, around the same price bracket..0

I would also go for the netbook.
You can't download files to the iphone.0 -
You can download certain files, I just did it.
Damoderby, I have a couple of laptops and yes they are handy, but I use my iphone all the time as it is handy and in my pocket, so if it is for occasional useage, and you are not concerned about screen size and just convienience go for an iphone.0 -
Laptop. Unless you want a phone?0

Well here's what Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said about netbooks recently:
"I see cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, very small screens. And just not a consumer experience and not something we would put the Mac brand on, quite frankly. It's not a segment we're interested in and we don't believe customers are interested in.
A customer who wants to buy a small computer for e-mail or web browsing may want to buy an iPod touch or an iPhone.
If we find a way to deliver a product that makes an innovative contribution, Apple may enter the space if a real market materializes.
It's a stretch to call a netbook a personal computer. They're propping up numbers for the industry as a whole."0 -

Or email. Or iTunes. Or the App Store.0 -

I left out the two middle ones so you don't take whatever I say a slew on Apple , but it's an interesting statement considering Apple have made the iPhone into the portable device for internet access on the move when it has a smaller screen and no physical keyboard unlike Netbooks, where there is a proven demand for.0 -

I hear what you're saying, but an iPhone doesn't try to be a personal computer (though it can certainly do many of the same things). Netbooks do try to be little computers; the differences mainly being they're smaller (but not as small as an iPhone/iPod Touch) and generally cheaper (but not necessarily cheaper than an iPhone/iPod Touch).
They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but I don't think Oppenheimer's comments are far from the truth.0
