my best friend lives near a massive pylon and 3 years ago at the age of 21/22 had contracted mouth cancer.
Had to have a part of her tongue, gum and jaw cut away plus she had some sort of cancer busting thing implanted into her mouth to get rid of the last of the cells (cant mind the name of it now)
She has never smoked and only occasionally drank plus was v. young to get it.

Personally after what happened to her I wouldnt buy any kind of property near a pylon never mind one in my backyard!

My best friend died of a brain tumour at 22 after growing up near pylons and power lines. Within a radius of about a mile I also know of a 26 year old who had breast cancer. a 17 year old with lung cancer and a 20 year old with bowel cancer.

They are still studying the effects but I would never let anyone I cared about live near one. I firmly believe that in a few years down the line they will be viewed the same way as smoking or asbestos and we'll be horrified we ever put them up.

She also lived on a tarmaced road and used toothpaste, presumably. Why blame the pylon?

There is a 132,000 volt metal pylon next to where I work, and I noticed that a house across the road literally right under the cable path took AGES to sell. These are only the "small" type of metal pylon, not the big 400,000 volt monsters like this one not far from where I live:

  • I dont beleive there has been any conclusive evidence that electricity pylons are harmful and its worth remembering that we bombard ourselves with radiation and EMF's on a daily basis..TV, mobile phones etc etc...but if you are wobbling about buying a property with a pylon near by..then think to the future when you are planning on selling..your potential buyers may have wobbles and you may find it difficult to sell. My daughters friends house is literally next door to a pylon and you can hear it buzzing, which would annoy me more than anything

Which is why its a good idea to turn off wireless routers when they aren't in use and you should avoid carrying your mobile phone in your jeans pocket (too close to the important stuff!).
  • Unfortunately, for our family, we have a rather large and ugly pylon close to our back garden. It actually stands at the end of a neigbours garden that is about four doors away! The power cables pass over our garden and over the neighbouring gardens in the street. There are about six lines of cable, which we were given to believe are not high voltage, but medium voltage cables.
The cables have adversley affected the market value of our property, and we are having difficulty selling our house. Most potential buyers are put of by the closeness of the pylon.

However we applied for compensation from the electricity company and received £10,000, minus solicitors fees etc.
So I would advise anyone who like us lives close to power cables, to pursue their local elecricity company.

Why was this? Were the pylons and lines built after you bought the house?

I can't imagine that there could be any payments for existing lines. The price of the house will have reflected its location (good or bad).

i wouldn't touch it - and i wouldn't buy a house with a mini substation next to it either - our estate seems to have several of them and i've heard they too have been linked to cancer

OP, cant tell you what to do as it has to be your decision but I have worked in the property industry for a number of years. Properties with pylons anywhere nearby would ordinarily be the last to sell and we would generally have to give substantial discounts (and even then we could struggle to sell them.) I personally would not buy one as this can put alot of buyers off and as other posters have said, in future, you want your property to be as marketable as possible. If your target market would likely be a family with young children for example then you would have to be prepared to perhaps take quite a while to resell as this is likely to cause a concern. Obviously I can only generalise as I dont know where the property is etc but the aforementioned is my experience of the situation.

Hi, weve found a house that we've put an offer in for, but we have seen that behind the back garden there is a big electricity pylon.

We dont know if we should go ahead, i saw that its really linked to children, we have a 17 year old, and ourselves are over 40. We dont really know what to do, what are the chances of anythin happenin or is it all myth?

    thanks alot

don't buy it, and don't ask MSE.com for views when your children are at stake. caution, do not buy. rumours or not, no smoke without fire...heck don't give your kids a mobile either!
