Buying a house - electricity pylon

Hi, weve found a house that we've put an offer in for, but we have seen that behind the back garden there is a big electricity pylon.

We dont know if we should go ahead, i saw that its really linked to children, we have a 17 year old, and ourselves are over 40. We dont really know what to do, what are the chances of anythin happenin or is it all myth?

thanks alot

Don't fly a kite in the back garden.

On a more serious note you will need to check with your mortgage company as some of them don't like properties near pylons.

There isn't a great deal of confirmed evidence either way so really it comes down to whether you think you are likely to be susceptible to any effects pylons may have and whether you would be comfortable with that possibility of risk.

One other thing to consider, YOU are hesitating to buy based on the presence of a pylon. When you come to sell your prospective buyers will have the same thoughts.

I guess the question should be do you want more children?

If you're meaning the links to cancer (leukaemia etc) then your child isn't really in the age bracket that was affected. Pylons will affect future sales/price though...

Always think ahead. At some time in the future you will probably want to sell this house and potential buyers will have same concerns. At best pylons are unsightly, but plenty of people live near them even under the wires themselves! No one really knows what long term risks could be, plenty of speculation, some facts, but not wholly conclusive.

I wouldn't knowingly live near to something pumping that much voltage through it.

If were you, even if you're not particularly bothered, I would expect it to be more difficult to sell than the same house without the pylon and therefore you should try to get it a little cheaper to account for that. :o

From my point of view, as an agent, it is really quite bad news but depends on how much and what other mitigating features you may be offering. I recall one house in tip top condition inside and outside but whilst there were good numbers of viewers every single one said NO because of the pylon. OK it was a charcater cottage with 4/5 bedrooms and three receptions but it looked really cheap at first glance.

The eventual buyer turned up for the viewing and said, at the front door, they couldn't view because of the pylon but when they went inside they fell in love and bought.

My parents moved to a house, was about 60yds from a massive pylon... this was when I was 6. I think I'm OK....

To be fair, the most annoying thing was the hum they make when the air's damp. Otherwise, plant a tree to obscure it!

my best friend lives near a massive pylon and 3 years ago at the age of 21/22 had contracted mouth cancer.
Had to have a part of her tongue, gum and jaw cut away plus she had some sort of cancer busting thing implanted into her mouth to get rid of the last of the cells (cant mind the name of it now)
She has never smoked and only occasionally drank plus was v. young to get it.

Personally after what happened to her I wouldnt buy any kind of property near a pylon never mind one in my backyard!

Is it a wooden pylon or the big steel ones, as aren't the wooden ones less of a risk upto 11 000 volts whereas the steel one carry 100 000 volts or something?
