Do they really need to collect all that info just to check my O/S is
    legit

To make sure it's the same computer yeah... Otherwise you would be able to mirror an os onto two identical computers and get away with paying for 1 os licence. By checking the S/N ect it makes this a allot harder, to pull off.

Maybe a pirate version would be a better option afterall.

I think a 'hacked' piece of software world contain more than just the tools to get a s/n and IP. Most hacked software contain trojans and you'll end up with a virus infected computer pumping out all sorts of info.

The chances are your ip address will change when you disconnect your internet, and besides you can't get someones house address via their IP, at most they will the city you live in. (see below)

Why should I have to install it? My O/S is legal, end of.

Why does M$ need to check the validity of my O/S on a daily basis?
Why does M$ gather not only my ip address but my HDD serial number, user locale, system locale,O/S version,PID/SID,BIOS info and BIOS MD5 checksum?

Do they really need to collect all that info just to check my O/S is
legit, which they already know as I have already confirmed with them?

I am sorry for being a "stick in the mud" but I simply do not wish to
    install this software.

Maybe a pirate version would be a better option afterall.

    Thanks anyway.

Can I just ask, why is everyone automatically
assuming I am using a pirate version of XP?

As I have said before, I have already proven to
Microsoft that my software is legitimate.

BTW If it's WindowsMedia Player 11 then it's only checking to see if the copy of windows is valid.

I don't think I should have to validate a product
which is already validated, plus I don't think I
should have to give up the info I listed above
    for that validation.

I think this thread has come to an end and as such
I will not post any further on it.

    Thanks again everyone.

Despite the scepticism here, there are plenty of respectable commentators who still criticise WGA from genuine users' standpoints

    http://windowssecrets.com/comp/090416/

It isn't necessary to install WGA, and it is said to be possible to remove it.

And then, when the update box comes up asking to install it, deselect WGA, and tick the box never ask me this question again

By the way, apparently Microsoft free support for Windows XP was ended a few days ago, so you'll be on your own if you try to ask help for it.

I still don't agree with the main point in that article - that these copyright protection procedures harm genuine users. Maybe others are more sensitive than me but I'd suggest that I find hundreds of things every single day which inconvenience me more than having to click and agree to something on the PC once every few months.
