Can I claim JSA ?

I saw a thread earlier with someone in exactly the same position as me but it had petered out. I currently work full time. Me and O/H plan to move to Dorset. O/H is going in 2 weeks and will be setting up a small biz to support himself. Plan is I follow down in 6 months once his biz is up and running. Here's the question - when the 6 months are up, I'll be voluntarily resign from work. I was hoping I could claim JSA Contribs based, while I took a 'sabbatical'. Before anyone has a go, I've worked the last 30 years without a break, paying tons of tax and NI, and want this time to re-think what I actually want to do/get qualified for and I need this time for myself. I think because i voluntarily quit my job that I can't get JSA, even though relocating to be with my O/H doesn't seem to matter.
What if ..... after I moved, my O/H's biz 'employed' me, say for 3 months, with all the relevant paperwork .... then 'made me redundant ' as the business couldn't support me. Would that work ? Would I then get JSA ??

if you resign you wont be entitled to anything.0

On resignation, you may get JSA, but it most likely will be restricted for the maximum period.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Thanks but you've missed the question - which is the bit I've quoted above.0 -
Sorry tp bump this, but hoping to get some opinions on whether this will work.0

Dont know why you would give up a job to live on £56.20 though0 -

Probably because I don't want to spend the rest of my working life doing something I don't want to do in a place I don't want to be.
My O/H is not my husband.
I'm learning that despite paying a fortune into this system I get sod all out when needed. While £ 56.20 may not be much to you - it can make the difference between being able to make this choice or not to me. It bugs me that some people live their whole lives on benefits ( and I grew up with many who did ) but if I want to change career and re-train, I get !!!!!! all.0 -

Im on income support so I do live on that amount, your asked for an opinion and thats what you got, sorry if it wasnt what you wanted to hear :rolleyes:0 -
Sorry myself, it wasn't what I wanted to hear but so be it.
Lesson learned - I'll do it anyway - if benefits are restricted, I'll live with it, then once on benefits I'll stay on them for as long as possible while I retrain/take courses/chill out whatever.0 -
You could allways do some temp work when you move down before going om your sabbatical that would then be listed as you last employment and as it would be a temporary job you would not be deemed to have given it up voluntarily. Mind you would have to apply for jobs when on JSA and depending on your personal advisor, jobagreement and place you are moving to this could mean that you would find yourself with a job very soon. If your benefits would be stopped for having left your job out of your own accord you would only be able to get reduced benefots if you were claiming hardship and in order to do that you would have to claim income based JSA and therefor make a joint claim with your OH and meet all the criteria set out for hardship. Would it be a viable option to go and work part time as you would then have more money and still have time to see what you want to do.0

Re: arguments about paying taxes etc and then not getting anything out of the system.
Contibutions-based JSA is an insurance payment. You get it when you lose your job due to events beyond your control, not for giving up work voluntarily.
Say I have paid 300 a year house insurance for 20 years. 6000 altogether. That doesn't mean I can legitimately claim for a new telly if I deliberately put a hammer through the screen of my TV.0
